What Kind of Sunblock Do the Half-Naked Hollister Boys on Broadway Wear? We Found Out. Your Summer Sunblock Guide.
By Leah Chernikoff
Love ‘em or hate ‘em, if you’re passing through SoHo, the spectacle of the Hollister greeters on Broadway is hard to miss. They wear neon board shorts, sunblock on their noses, flip flops, and, well, that’s about it.
So when we were thinking about what kind of sunblock to invest in for the summer, we figured the sunblock the boys of Hollister use was a good place to start. They stand outside in the glaring sun for six hour shifts, so whatever they’re slathering on their precious noses better be good.
And if white zinc–the Hollister sunblock of choice–isn’t your thing (and we’re betting it isn’t), we consulted Angelique Serrano, Beauty Editor at Allure, for the best sunscreens.

Ugh. Everyone of these sunblocks is so bad for the environment, so wear these if you, you know, hate the ocean. Your skin is your body's largest organ: covering it in chemicals is a really bad idea. I love Alba sunscreen, though, and highly recommend it (I don't work for them!). It smells so awesome and doesn't harm your skin or the water supply like these do.
Thanks for doing this guys :)
has anyone tried the relatively new super fluid sunblock from kiehls? worth the $32 price or no?
Of course! And thanks for the tip Miten.
The only sunscreens that I trust are the ones recommended by http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com/ or any other similar website that gives you straight up facts on the toxicity and efficacy of sunscreen brands and makeup. Dermatologists and beauty editors don't always necessarily recommend products that are healthy for your body because they are either sponsored or have advertisers to keep happy. The ones that I trust come from beauty editors who consider the long term harmful effects (green beauty magazines…) But I am happy to see that magazines like Allure and Lucky are embracing more healthy beauty brands and not just their advertisers. The brands that are some of the most dangerous are the drugstore ones and the department store cosmetic counter ones. It's really quite interesting if you look into it. If you are careful about what kind of food you eat and the pesticides and chemicals that go into your food, it makes sense to care about what you put on your skin because it is absorbed into your body. Dr. Patricia Wexler's products, for example, have many dangerous chemicals in them.
i only recently learned about how the sunscreen we wear is killing the coral in the ocean…
i apologize if my comment was obnoxious or insulting-it's just one of those subjects that i really want to comment on. no disrespect intended.
We love your insight!
(insight with a slight case of hypochondria)
I prefer physical sunscreens to chemical ones because you don't have to reapply every two hours unless you sweat a lot or go swimming. One that I recently discovered and absolutely love is Mychelle's Sun Shield. It's the only physical sunscreen I've found that rubs in easily and doesn't leave white marks all over my clothes. It also looks matte on your face and is gentle enough to use around your eyes.
i am going to look into this. i always look like a ghost with most physical sunscreens….and nano technology is bad too …..oy you can't win
