Adventures in Copyright: Lucky Brand Claws at Céline’s Clog
By Lauren Sherman
As the tipster who sent in this AIC lamented, we’re surprised it didn’t happen sooner.
Lucky Brand, best known for its denim, has created a clog for summer. No surprise, right? Clogs are the shoe of the season, if not the year, and finding a pair for $99 is definitely a good thing.
Except when the affordable version is just a cheap knockoff.
Lucky’s “Lesh” shoe is a direct replica Céline‘s summer style, right down to the three round studs tacking the leather onto the wooden heel and thin rubber sole.
The slight differences: Céline’s hardware is gold-colored, while Lucky’s is silver. And the leather on the Lucky shoe is a darker brown (and dare we say, much less attractive.)
We think we’ll skip this design altogether and save our pennies for a pair of Swedish Hasbeens. You can’t get more authentic than that, right?

Actually, although the Celine quality (only judging from what I can see of that miniscule pic) appears higher, the Lucky clog looks better.
And how many variations of a clog can one do?
Probably more than one.
They could have at least made the bleak effort to cross the straps over the other side, or use four studs. You know, token modifications. There is no effort to make it seem legitimate.
While, I agree that this is a blatant copy and they could/should have made some modifications. Not everyone can afford (or want to afford) a $500 + pair of clogs
Yes, it's a direct copy but the quality of the stuff from Lucky Brand is not bad so I would get those and pocket the difference.
Stylewise, these clogs seem so uncomfortable and heavy, you would look like a Clydesdale.
I've always been a fan of flat/platform espadrilles for summer casualness.
I love knock off reports!

love them too! but the lucky ones do look better in my opinion too
I beg to differ. I saw the Celine ones and hated them- I hate gold. I actually think that the Lucky ones look better. I purchased them and the leather is a really nice caramel color and the contrast between the leather and the wood looks better than the Celine ones. And they are made pretty well.
Oh, and I want to add that I don't think that the fact that Lucky copied the Celines will hinder sales of Celine clogs. There are people who would never buy the knockoff, and they will buy the originals. I sometimes feel that way. It's nice for those who could never afford Celine to have the look for less.
How about Jeffrey Campbell's shameless copying of Chanel and Swedish Hasbeen's? Just embarrassing since it's almost the same price but with bad quality compared to the originals. http://needsupply.com/womens/brands/jeffrey-cam…
Lucky’s “Lesh” shoe looks better than its previous version. The slightest change in color has made it preferable…
