A Celebrity Trend We Can Get Behind: Madewell All Over
By Lauren Sherman
As writers whose homework includes reading high fashion glossies, it’s occasionally fun to peek inside something less sophisticated, like a weekly rag, just to see who is cheating on/lying to/zoomin’ whom. But when it comes to the trend report at the back of the book, we typically don’t find much inspiration.
Yet now and again, a celebrity gets a style right. In this circumstance, it’s not a particular trend, but a brand. And it’s not just one celebrity, but a few.
Everyone from Jessica Alba to Katie Holmes to Naomi Watts to Rachel Bilson has been wearing Madewell as of late, and we understand why.
From the label’s collabs with Alexa Chung and Wanderlust to its stunning collection of private label shoes, bags, scarves, dresses, etc., we get why celebs–who need to look perfect, even when casual–are scooping it up.
Of course, having Bilson running around in its wears is good for the Madewell brand–and sales–but it’s obvious that these girls are wearing the stuff because they like it, not because it was gifted to them.
Have you worn Madewell since seeing it on your favorite actress?

I f!cking love madewell. Without a doubt, everything in the store dovetails with my style and taste, it's a little of a reach for my budget, but worth it. Even my boyfriend complimented me on the last shirt I brought home there saying that he thought it fit me great, and was cut excellently. He's kind of a 'dude' who is not really into that fashion hoo ha so I know that's a real compliment.
Love madewell, cute and chic.

Madewell's denim shorts are my best purchase of the summer (I detailed my love for them here: http://bit.ly/9eQ0MD), but I bought them simply because I heard they were great. Full disclosure: I would readily admit if I bought Madewell because I saw a celebrity I liked wearing them, which is something I've definitely done before.
I love Madewell! I'm so glad they made it through the worst of the recession, even when they didn't have online shopping. Long live Madewell!!!
Am I the only one who thinks that Madewell isn't very, er, well made? I love J Crew, so I was excited when Madewell opened on Broadway, but the quality of their stuff, especially the knits, seems so shoddy compared to J Crew. I always go into the store, see a lot of cute stuff I want to try on, leave disappointed and walk over to Prince.
I work at JCrew, and my goal is to transfer to be a store director for Madewell once they make their way down the east coast, it seriously made my day to see you all post support for them! Sales haven’t been great, but hopefully this exposure will only be the beginning!
Next time, walk over to 94 Grand St. You will not find anything shoddy there.
I recently purchased their signature riding boot because a friend of mine had them in both colors and I loved them. They are a little pricey for me but well worth because they are beautifully made and the leather quality is great. Also if your in school or work for a school you get 15% off.
