Adventures in Copyright: Zara’s Take on the PS1
By Dhani Mau
A Dominican Republic-based reader sent in this pic from Zara of what he calls “a veeeery poor and cheap immitation of Proenza Schouler’s PS1.” Indeed, the “leather” looks plastic-y and the black part appears to be canvas.
We love the PS1, because it’s an “It bag,” we guess, but it’s so simple and understated that it lacks the annoying fad aspect of most It bags that came before it. Still, lots of celebrities carry it around, so we’re not surprised someone like Zara would decide to create something similar. Not a very impressive knock-off of the Olsen favorite. However, at least the buckles and colorways are slightly different from the original, unlike Navoh’s knock-off, which was more of a straight-up copy and just as cheap-looking.

I sort of feel that ASOS did it a bit better:

uh in what universe is that a knock-off of the PS1??? it’s just another a top-handle satchel. get over it.
very poor and cheap imitation? i think you’re exagerating it. it isn’t too bad considering it’s way more affordable than PS.
i think this is definitely crossing the line into “just a satchel” territory. there is a fine line between taking another designer/artists work and copying it, and just simply making a classic bag that has been around since the dawn of bags {ie a satchel, tote, backpack}. if this is a copy of the PS1 then the person who copied the Proenza boys need to look a little closer at their target because it looks pretty different to me.
i bought the bag. and i like it. its 79.99 vs the $1500 price tag of a ps1.
I hope you didn’t mean Dominican Republic, because if you did.
Like Tsk. Is all I could say.
I haven’t seen the PS in real life, but it strikes me as impractical in that you have to slip the satchel bands out of their holders to open the bag. The Zara bag seems quite different because you can just open it with a twist of the catch. The suede version of the PS bag you showed in another post looked very attractive, but it really is a different bag to the Zara.
Uh, that’s just a satchel. ASOS have a much more similar bag to the PS1 which I’m sure you’re aware of but haven’t featured.
It is the sad reality that brands do copy brands and again copy brands and copy and copy. That is the fashion business nowerdays on highstreet level. And the result is, that you dont find any other looks and shapes out in retail.

eh i would not say it is a copy. in the lobby of my office building there is a stand selling a cheap knock off of the alexa bag that is way more similiar to the alexa bag then that is to the ps1.
also, i have a ps1 and it is beautiful! it’s worth every penny.
You guys haven’t heard? Proenza Schouler invented the satchel.
Agree with *Uhh* – In what universe is that a knockoff. I think the reader in DR is “reaching”.
School children from 1935 are ripping off Proenza Schouler.
