ISTANBUL--After some of the wacky fashions we saw from Istanbul's student designers, it was nice to see something really pretty and wearable go down the runway last night.
Bora Aksu, who previously showed in London, wrapped up yesterday's show with a bow. And heels laced up like toe shoes. Aksu was clearly inspired by the ballet. The looks were undeniably girly, but in a good, not too cloying way. He sent down gauzy flouncy mini dresses in layers of nude, overlaid in sheer black. While the dresses were simple and delicate, the leggings they were paired with had a bit more edge. They were thick, with geometric patches, and some of them shimmered in gold.
According to Turkish editors who know Aksu's work, his show was nothing new. Still, it was a pretty show, and I would be happy to wear most of what I saw on the runway. Then again, I've got a thing for ballet, too.
