We managed to get our hands on some of Vena Cava‘s much anticipated collection for Bloomingdale’s in-house line Aqua. And when we say “get our hands on,” we do mean that literally, as we modeled the collection.
Devotees of Sophie Buhai and Lisa Mayock won’t be disappointed by their collection for Aqua (and neither will their wallets). We loved that the line included a silk tee in one of the black and white prints Mayock and Buhai used in an earlier collection. As for the other standout pieces? A structured black double-breasted sweater coat with a tie at the waist is perfect for fall, and a super soft slouchy mauve-y tee with a mesh back is comfy and sexy at once.

I like the black coat and the military style coat.
Each and every last one of those looks is tacky, pedestrian, and hideously ill-fitting. I’m sorry to sound so harsh, but I expected more of Vena Cava. They look exactly like pieces one can find at either a thrift shop or at Forever 21 (except not as tackily embellished)…horrible.
Well, no.
The shirt in pic #1 has the black details on the shoulder and down the neck with the diagonal and horizontal graphics. I also like that the lines on the front pockets match up with the shirt.
The gray tee in pic #2 and #3, has a really nice feminine cut to it and the subtle white lines adds some texture. The see-through back mesh thingy is inline with what’s going on right now. If those jeans are by Vena Cava, they are definitely not ill-fitting at all!
The military inspired blazer in pic #4 has cool buttons, sometimes you just need good details.
The coat in pic #5 could be the best piece out of the bunch. I like the scoop neck, the overflap around the shoulder, how it starts with one button and turns into 2 going down the coat. You can’t find this at a thrift shop or Forever 21.
Lastly, some thought has been put into the dress with the color combination, single strap and the light ruching.
Sophie and Lisa know what they’re doing but they can’t help that some will just not get it.
Well, yes.
I noticed all of the detailing that you were so kind to point out. My opinion still stands. I don’t like the pieces. It has nothing at all to do with my not getting it. In fact, I get it all.
I doubt that the jeans were made by Vena Cava. I could be mistaken, but I doubt that, too.
They just don’t look that great to me. I could certainly go into a long schpiel about how and why they don’t appeal, but it’s not that deep.
Ian, I agree. I think they are ordinary. The tailoring on the “military inspired” jacket is poor – the shoulders are a little too wide and appear to have no shoulder pads (which could have helped the line) and the arms are too long (I’m asuming, Leah that you are of average height). I also didn’t think the neckline was flattering. The fabric in the black coat looked cheap (almost like acrylic polar fleece – surely it couldn’t be that bad?) as do the buttons on both jackets. The jeans looked like a good fit – they certainly look good on Leah. I know this is supposed to be a cheaper line, but I don’t think a good designer should put their name to something so dismal.
