Marc Jacobs To Do Plus Size?

Tuesday, Aug 3, 2010 / 5:36 PM

There has been a lot of discussion about plus size on the MarcJacobsInt twitter feed lately. Jacob’s biz partner, chronic over-twitterer Robert Duffy, is back at the helm and for the last couple of days, when he’s not twittering about his Paraguayan husband whom he met online, he’s been talking about Marc Jacobs potentially doing plus size. The latest tweets, posted just half an hour ago, suggest Jacobs will design for plus: “We are in talks now. For plus sizes,” and again, “Listen, we are in the very beginning stages of talking to a partner about plus sizes. Relax. It won’t be based on the collection line.”

We’re hoping twitter speaks the truth. We were encouraged by Saks’ decision to stock plus-size clothing from high fashion brands come fall. If Marc Jacobs does plus it could help change the impossible size zero standards of the industry.

To help catch you up on how these latest tweets, which make Marc Jacobs sound rather committed to doing plus size, came about here’s the whole twistory:

Interest in Plus sizes?Women are dyeing for fashion. Need to get the message out. But when we put 14 and 16 in the stores no takers.Stopped

I think this is a great idea. I really do think that plus sized clothing should be made by designers instead of the normal itty bitty unrealistic sizes. In no way should it promote obesity and unhealthy eating habits, but at the time same there are men and women out there who are genuinely big and tall and can not find great pieces that fit!

This is a tremendous idea, of course. But I would like to see better, say, creative control exerted over some areas of Marc and Robert's empire first. The menswear is never amazing, and often very unappealing. It isn't the sort of thing the man who loves the Marc Jacobs look wants to wear. The eyewear is not exciting either, in my opinion. It seems like they would be the brand to have quality, classic designs that are quirky and vintage. None of these things would be glaring if the womenswear weren't so very exciting, and consistently so.
I've read Marc quoted as saying he doesn't know anything about menswear, but I think over the years (maybe not including the kilts, but even those have caught on) he's always been wearing what cool guys want to wear. Why don't they just make the clothes he and Robert want to wear? If it works for Tom Brown and Tom Ford it can work for you MJ.

IF 50% OF AMERICANS ARE OBESE, EITHER YOU DRESS THEM OR I WILL. DO U C WHAT I SEE. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. THANK YOU. aaaha41@cox.net

worked 23 yrs in Retail- sales, buyer, clerk, Stylist/makeup artist, did fashion shows, art directed and fashion forecasted. well, before my many surgeries i was a curvy size 8/10/12 depending on the cut. i had 3 closets full of vintage to whatever.
Now i am FAT, and i have no affordable clothing options. Who wants to sweat in Polyester? There is a whole bunch of women from 50 down who want contemporary looks, affordable prices made in natural fibers. Not that hard to do, designers just have to fight for that acceptance…
