One of Holly Fulton's incredible designs.

Swarovski just released the list of shows it’ll be sponsoring for Spring 2011. The roster is long, but distinguished:

Prabal Gurung
Juan Carlos Obando
Erdem
GILES
Marios Schwab
Richard Nicoll
Mark Fast
JW Anderson
Holly Fulton
Henry Holland
Michael van der Ham
Louise Goldin

What does a Swarovski sponsorship afford designers? Along with generous financial support, they’re also required to use Swarovski crystals in their collections. For some, like the embellishment-happy Holly Fulton, that’s easy. For others–say, Mark Fast–it’s a bit more challenging. (However, we saw a sneak peek of Fast pulling it off when we met him earlier this year. He actually embedded the pyramid gems into the knit.)

Congrats to the recipients–we can’t wait to see what they have in store for SS 2011!

This feels wrong….the designers should be able to do what they want with their designs! I have no problem with Swarovski slapping their logo everywhere, but now having to use their crystals!? Feels like sell out to me, but then again, these designers wouldn’t have shows without it. Corporate intervention = sad!

A little bird I know at Mark Fast is probably over the moon with excitement over this. They’ll have no trouble working in some sparkle.

Get real. We are not talking about artists starving in garrets. These are all designers in a commercial world. Swarovski sponsors them to give their product an image of fashion and newness and also to see just what can be done with it. I think most appreciate the money and the challenge. They are free to reject the sponsorship.
