Six Breakout Models of Spring 2011

Wednesday, Sep 8, 2010 / 11:53 AM

Model castings can be a black hole in the minds of the fashion press, since most occur very privately, behind closed doors. Luckily enough for us, however, casting director Andrew Weir of ACW Worldwide invited us to observe a massive casting for the Spring 2011 season.

Hopping at the chance to see models in their natural habitat, I made sure not to miss this event. Hundreds of girls lined the hallways of the Hudson Hotel, books and heels in hand. Inside the gorgeous Husdon Library, girls were photographed, walked, “scored,” and entered into ACW’s database in a flurry of business and buzz. To the untrained eye it was tough to distinguish which models were the best and which were the worst, until they walked. The best girls had strides long and fast, their hair flying in a self-generated breeze, among them Fashionista faves Ashley Smith, Ann Kenny, and Kirby Kenny.

Andrew Weir found six gems at his casting, sure to be the big stars of Spring 2011. It’s all about that je ne sais quoi for Mr. Weir, as well as finding “strong, beautiful, healthy, magnificent women.”

Love the first model, but I think Vika and Ziporra are going to be big. Vika has a Kate Moss vibe to her.

Vika has a Kate Moss vibe to her… is she also a cockeyed????

I know that tonight I will be having nightmares involving Katja Verheul’s toothpick legs and huge feet trampling me while her over-sized head bobs and her Chuckie-like laughter pierces the night, scaring the gang bangers on my block to death.

All white ?

My thought exactly

Speaking of, come to the CRUSH party tonight and check out all the boys.

7:30 – 10pm
251 W. 48th St.

They all look the same and they all look relatively boring to me. These types of models are a dime a dozen.

ano.

“strong, beautiful, healthy, magnificent women” ????

Don’t make me laugh.

I’ll give you beautiful and perhaps magnificent, as I’m sure they’re all lovely young women but strong? HA!

Katja Verheul looks like she’s about to drop over. None of them are smiling. All of them look starved.

They are all beautiful, but look eerily similar. Two even have the same name. It would be nice if there was a more diverse group of models chosen.

These girls (GIRLS not women) are in no way strong or healthy.
And of course, still no diversity…

“strong, beautiful, healthy, magnificent women.”??!!
Strong? None of these girls even look like they are capable of doing a push up. These are not girls I would look up to. I’m sick of seeing the same thing on the runway. B-O-R-I-N-G!!!!!!!!!!

Please bring back Britt these new girls are ruining your brand Breaking Media. All white. All look anorexic. All look boring and the same. The feature has been done to death what makes any website that does it standout is picking diverse models. Not this vanilla crap!

Those first two models’ legs are horrifyingly skinny. Horrifyingly. You didn’t even feel a little twinge of irony when quoting him?

If getting diversity with skin color is impossible, can we at least try a different hair color? all blonde? What is this a Prada Casting?

There’s a reason why models tend to be blondes, there’s also a reason why they’re all one height and all one size. Because their essential function is to act as displays for the clothes. Brunettes can be gorgeous too, and a girl who’s 6’1 might look sensational in clothes, but the hair is harder to dye and that sensational looking girl would take the attention away from the rest of the lineup and all of the clothes. Because we idolize models like celebrities, it’s easy to forget about the actual point of their job.

good that someone has common sence and still remembers what models are really for!
BRAVO! :)

I don’t want to imply that there’s anything demeaning about the fact of the job, I don’t call them hangers, but display is the function and nothing else should matter.

Those girls look sick. Weak and starved, really. C’mon people…

These pictures clearly show us that fashion still prefers anorexic doll-like children instead of strong, healthy, diverse women. Who really finds this attractive? I am tired of flipping through a magazine filled exclusively with little white girls. I’m sure most people agree with me that they would rather have a real woman of all colors represent a brand then a child.

I think some of those girls have amazing futures ahead (vika, hanne, zippora), but yeah, the ones opening the slide show are not, er, among the strongest. In any sense of the word.

i dislike reading negative comments about women’s bodies, whether they are thin or not. it’s still hurtful.

I see how meltingly young these girls are and feel protective. Andrew Weir’s description – strong, healthy, beautiful – evokes a confident 28 y.o. career women, not these inexperienced young teens. Hope they are looked after and don’t fall into bad hands (a certain sleazy photographer comes to mind).

poor children models are tooooo skinny. horrible to promote such unhealthy life style. too many young girls are starving themselfs.

oh god….why do gorgeaus teen girls…have to throw away their youth….some of them even their childhood?!

People, this is nothing new. It’s like China having 14 year old gymnasts; there’s a reason for it.

Now, I agree with all of you but as soon as there’s an article about models, weight, race, there’s all this outcry and disgust.

Instead of talking about it, take action. If you don’t like Andrew’s white-washing, don’t support his company and the clients he casts for. If you want to see more color, buy Italian(big supporter of blacks before it was trendy)/Chinese/Japanese/Indian/ Vogue.
