Adventures in Copyright: Steve Madden Takes On Burberry

A reader tipped us off about these Steve Madden booties’ and the striking resemblance they bear to Burberry Prorsum’s Shearling-lined aviator boots. The Steve Maddens are clearly a knock-off. The shape, placement of the buckles and platform seem directly copied from the original. And it’s difficult to tell in this photo, but the Steve Maddens also appear to have some sort of shearling lining. Of course, the Burberrys, which retail on Net-a-Porter for $1,095 are much better-looking overall, but Steve Madden’s $150 knock-offs really aren’t so bad. What do you think?

1) outright copied designs
2) actually been sued for it?
They did the same thing last year to Alexander McQueen (RIP).
No comparison. You can see the difference in quality right through the page. I can, even without my cheaters on!
this makes me realize how much i want those burberrys. damn
I think it’s funny sometimes when people throw their arms up at things like this. “Look at how cheap that rip-off version is!!” These reactions would be the exact same if the names were switched and the SM version was in fact the Burberry version.

steve madden are not alone here. topshop and river island have also done pretty much the same shoe
SM is the king of shoe knockoffs but he’s appealing to a different market. If you could afford more than $1K for shoes you wouldn’t even consider his line.
