Balmain Spring 2011: It’s Christophe Decarnin’s Way or the High Way
By Lauren Sherman
PARIS–Minimalism might be the new old thing, but Balmain designer Christophe Decarnin could give a flying f*ck. He made that quite clear today at Le Grand Hotel, where he showed his Spring 2011 collection.
Models including Daria, Carmen Kass (with a shaggy new pageboy cut), and Isabeli Fontana stomped down the runway to what seemed like several iterations of Frank Sinatra’s “My Way.” And indeed, Decarnin did it his way. Save for a plain white jacket near the end of the show, the designer presented his signature sparkly blazers, some ripped t-shirts, and few pieces embellished with studded crystals.
But the collection felt oddly familiar in other ways as well. In particular, its styling was nearly identical to that of Isabel Marant‘s Fall 2010 show…Emmanuelle Alt’s touch, no doubt.
Also of note: There were a few models sporting Elle editor Kate Lanphear’s signature hair style, and we couldn’t help feeling like the entire collection was dedicated to her, or at least the idea of her. Much like Christopher Bailey at Burberry this season, Decarnin took the idea of punk and made it glamorous. Which, in a way, is sacrilige, but oh so fashionable.

Trash. Nothing more need be said.
But you kinda already said it
I was trying to think of a tactful way to express my sentiment for seeing this garbage that Decarnin sent down the runway, YET AGAIN, for the second year in a row. 2 years, 4 seasons.
This was the most tactful thing I could think of: TRASH.
Carmen Kass not Cass
Why has no one openly discussed how similar this collection is to last season’s Isabel Marant?!
That’s another of the problems I had with this collection. It looked JUST like Isabel Marant.
Decarnin should be out. He’s a one trick pony. And the trick isn’t even all that great.
Yes, but Marant was more 1950s rockabilly and Decarnin was more Sex Pistols.
Never mind the bollocks, here’s a $25,000 leather jacket!!!
I understand what you mean regarding the variances in inspiration, but the overall “feel” or “mood” of the show was very much the same. The silhouettes were incredibly similar and the styling was more or less identical.
That’s because , as Lauren mentioned above, Emmanuelle Alt is behind the styling for both labels so Marant and Decarnin can’t help it that she is so influential.
