And you thought fashion month was over. Not true! New Jersey’s inaugural fashion week (ahem, NJFW) kicked off this week to showcase emerging designers from the Garden State. “I want people to understand that New Jersey Fashion Week is the next great destination to showcase global emerging talent,” Donnella Tilery, the co-founder of NJFW told MSNBC.
While the Jersey Shore crew was a no show (not that they were expected but a girl can only hope for more Snooki, right?), there was a reality TV star presence at NJFW, thank goodness. The Manzo sisters, Caroline and Dina, from the Real Housewives of New Jersey were front row and opened up about Jersey style stereotypes.
“We dare to be ourselves — whatever makes us happy,” big sis Caroline, always reasonable, told Tonic. “I definitely feel the stereotypes,” Dina told MSNBC, “But tonight we’ll see the more elegant side of New Jersey.”
Hmm…”Elegant” isn’t exactly the word I’d use to describe the near-crotch-revealing numbers that came down the runway at New Jersey Fashion Week. There were also some fun chiffon guys with big bracelet-like rings attached to the trains so you could loop the bracelets over your wrists and make like a bird. But judge for yourself. Or judge from the reactions of the front row which vary from open-mouthed shock (of horror? delight?) to a guy on his cell phone. Here is what NJFW looked like:
I so badly want to work as a celeb hair stylist and style hair for fashion shows. I am a recent Paul Mitchell Grad who worked very hard to be where i am at today. I’m 25 and a single mother of one, but I refused to let anyone or anything tear me down. I was determined to finish school no matter what cause i knew if i was able to finish cosmetology school, endless opportunities would come. I understand that I don’t know it all and I’m hungry for more knowledge every day. I would love it if you could help me out and share with me some tips to reach my goals!
Thank you,
Lawanika
Dear Lawanika,
You sound like you have the best sort of dedication a person can have. The best you can do in this life is work very hard, be nice, and learn something new everyday.
Coco Rocha’s Really Nice Apartment: As part of Vogue’s APT with LSD series, Lauren Santo Domingo takes us inside the Gramercy Park apartment of model Coco Rocha and her husband, James Conran. As you can probably imagine, there are stunning views, lots of art books, and an amazing closet. {Vogue}
Tim Gunn’s At It Again: Tim Gunn has already shared his thoughts on Anna Wintour. Now it Lady Gaga’s turn. He told Yahoo’s OMG: “Who would want to emulate that? It’s not fashion. Those are costumes.” Really? She’s worn Armani, Gareth Pugh, Jeremy Scott, Alexander McQueen, Dolce & Gabbana. Aren’t they fashion designers? {Racked}
Revolver is a Magazine That Exists and Taylor Momsen is on the Cover: Taylor Momsen is on the cover of Revolver magazine holding a bunch of, well, revolvers, and wearing black lingerie. We get it, Taylor–you’re tough, you’re old enough to make you own discussions, and you should be allowed to stay out past midnight. Now, go put on some clothes. {Huffington Post}
For the seventh straight year, Lucky Magazine is turning NYC’s Metropolitan Pavilion into a discount shopping paradise and we got the scoop on this year’s deets. More than just a glorified warehouse sale, Lucky Shops 2010 will include cool extras like music, refreshments and giveaways. It will all kick off with a “VIP Shopping Party” hosted by Hilary Duff to celebrate Lucky’s 10th Anniversary and the mag’s new E-I-C Brandon Holley.
The catch? You have to buy tickets, and while it might seem silly to pay to go shopping, it could be worth it if you’re willing to make the commitment. The tickets are reasonable, depending on what kind of access you want. Plus, the list of participating designers–which you’ll find after the jump–is really good, especially at up to 70% off.
According to a juicy little tidbit in this morning’s WWD, in the print ads for Chloé’s new fragrance, Love, Chloé, Raquel Zimmermann is wearing a YSL belt. That’s YSL, not Chloé, that the face of the fragrance, launched this past September, is wearing. And of course, these are the print ads that have been blown up on billboards. Ruh roh.
When you think “museum benefit” you don’t immediately think of the downtown fashion, art, and design cool kids club, but that’s exactly what the Museum of Arts & Design’s (MAD) young patron’s gala on October 18th promises to be.
Like last year, the folks involved are a veritable who’s who of the downtown scene. Richard Meier, Joe Manganiello, Hannelore Knuts, Waris Ahluwalia and Julie Ragolia co-chair this year’s gala to benefit the museum’s arts education program. Chris Benz, Mandy Coon, Leigh Lezark and Pamela Love are among the names on the host committee. Paul Sevigny, Leo Fitzpatrick & Chrissie Miller and Chelsea Leyland will DJ. And because the event is for the museum’s “young patrons,” ticket prices, which range between $200 and $400, are actually pretty affordable for this kind of thing. You can buy them here.
The gala, called Metalball, will showcase the work of artists who have created works around a “metal” theme. Even model, artist, and co-chair Hannelore Knuts got in on the metal theme, producing this trippy art video with designer Christian Joy for the benefit. It’s sure to wake you up this morning. And we’ve got the first look. Check it out:
We divided and conquered last night so we could dine in the penthouse of the Trump Soho with Prabal Gurung and Swarovski and catch Janelle Monae perform and gawk at Alex McCord and Simon Van Kempen on the red carpet at the MNG by Mango for JCPenney Party.
I attended a dinner at the glass-walled “Sohi” room at the top of the new Trump Soho Hotel to celebrate the launch of the Spring/Summer 2011 Atelier Swarovski collection. Lauren already got a peek at the collection, designed by Joseph Altuzarra, Mark Fast, Prabal Gurung, Michael Kaplan and Jenny Manik Mercian, at Colette in Paris, so I was psyched to get a first hand look at the sparkling baubles myself. They sparkled almost as brightly as the city skyline, which, from the 47th floor at Spring at Varick Sts., was a glimmering thing to behold. Gurung was on hand to schmooze with editors, and it was his collection of punked out geometric bling, and Altuzarra’s crystals set in lucite bangles that stood out. Also? The food at the Trump Soho is really good. Thanks for a fabulous dinner Swarovski!
Dhani took on the MNG by Mango for JCPenney launch party at bank-turned-fancy-party-venue, Capitale, which featured a runway show and performance by Janelle Monae.
By most any fashion die-hard’s standards, Louis Vuitton and Parsons are considered the best of the best in their respective fields. So when they partner up for a competition that promotes sustainability the results are bound to impress.
Already in its second year, the competition, “Reconstruction 2.0,” asks Parsons students to create new garments around a particular theme using the Louis Vuitton archives. This year, students were challenged to create a garment out of Vuitton samples that embodied travel, an idea at the heart of the international Louis Vuitton brand. Six four-person teams were selected to compete.
“We were inundated with the most amazing projects and the most amazing ideas, as we knew we would be, and the difficulty was choosing the six teams to take part,” says Simon Collins, Parsons Dean of Fashion. “We could’ve tripled the size of the competition.”
