Archive for October 2010
It looks like logos aren’t the only thing Gap can’t make up their mind about. First, they reported that only the black suede lace-up wedges would be produced and would go on sale October 19. Then, we were told that the release would be postponed to October 28.
Today, in what we’re hoping is the final word in the Pierre Hardy X Gap conundrum, Gap announced in a press release that both the Pierre Hardy black suede wedges and Gap brand brown leather lace up ankle boots will be sold–three days earlier than last reported. The shoes will hit select New York, Chicago and Houston stores on Monday, October 25th and The Grove in L.A. and the Flood building in San Francisco on the 28th.

Vanessa Bruno Storms Los Angeles with Erin Wasson, Rosario Dawson, and the 90210 Girls
LOS ANGELES–Last night’s soiree at Vanessa Bruno’s first US boutique in Los Angeles brought some serious Parisian flair to Melrose Ave. The white, minimalist space provided a fresh backdrop to the bright florals and neons of the spring 2011 collection, which Bruno described as channeling an “urban, tropical spirit.” As for choosing a location for her stateside flagship, Bruno told us, “I love the spirit of LA, the laidback girls, everything about it. The first place I wanted to be was in LA.”

Fashion News Roundup: Jody Quon Out at W, Kaiser to Address CFDA, and Kim Kardashian Says No to Diamonds
Who, What, Why? Jody Quon, W‘s creative director of only five months, has abruptly resigned from the magazine. “It was a mutual decision and her position won’t be filled,” a W spokesperson told The Daily. Stefano Tonchi, who hired Jody in April, seemed very excited about her work on their first issue, so the departure is pretty surprising to us. Could it have had something to do with naked Kardashian fallout? {Daily Front Row}
These Tights Will Tone Your Ass: You’ve heard of shoes that promise to give you a better ass while you go about your day: There are FitFlops, MBT shoes, and Reebok’s EasyTones to name a few. Now there are tights that promise to do the same and more. Shapewear brand ShaToBu–that stands for the “tummy SHAping, muscle TOning, calorie BUrning workout you wear”–cite independent studies conducted by the University of Virginia to show that ladies who wear ShaToBu (agh that name!) “burn UP TO 12% MORE calories during daily activities like walking or climbing stairs.” Just by walking guys. Imagine that. {She Finds}
Befriending Burberry: Burberry recently reached 2 million Facebook followers–pretty impressive, as it took a year for them to gain one million users and only six months to double that. Perhaps they’ll reach four million by January? {Burberry’s Facebook}

Halloween is the perfect holiday for the fashion set. Encouraging outrageous ensembles and over-the-top dressing, it’s just the excuse to break out your rhinestone Louboutins.
That said, picking the right costume and executing it flawlessly are of the utmost importance. Most fashion followers are savvy enough to know prepackaged looks that come in plastic bags are never a wise decision. But dressing as fashion’s top stars is also risky, since no one will get the reference unless you go all the way.
We’ve compiled some outrageous and amazing costume ideas for the fashion-set. But be warned: These need a lot of prep-work.

Irina Shayk is best known as a swimsuit and lingerie model. And the girlfriend of football star Cristiano Ronaldo. She’s graced the pages of Sports Illustrated wearing nothing but a laptop (really) and modeled lots of lacy barely there lingerie but now, a curious press release points out, she’s going high fashion.
“She has now made a change from being sexy lingerie and swimsuit model to high fashion model with a spread in Harper’s Bazaar Spain and has msot [sic] recently graced teh [sic] cover of Elle Spain for tehir [sic] September issue,” the typo-riddled press release reads.
The release then goes on to explain Shayk’s rising profile: She ‘had a mention in Kanye West’s new song ‘Christian Dior Denim Flow.’”
Could it be? Is Kanye’s model name-dropping in ‘Christian Dior Denim Flow’ a game changer? We’re sure he’d like to think so.

Ten Questions For Project Runway
*spoilers everywhere!*
1) How adorable did Tim look wearing those wellies on Andy’s farm? And the catfish reaction? “I’ve never seen a Chinese man look that unattractive.” The famous Tim poise disappeared for a fleeting moment.
2) How can I live in a place where you just hack the top off a coconut when you need a drink and an adorable Laotian woman makes you a delicious dinner?
3) What do we think of Michael C’s whole “I’m gay and have a partner who outed me” scenario? Discuss.
4) Does Mondo really have a hot pink living room? I. Want. It.

We told you about Style.com’s new reality series last month; now we know more.
The “docu-series” is called North of Madison. Agency Doron Ofir, which cast MTV’s Jersey Shore and Paris Hilton: My New BFF, is looking for “Those between the ages of 21 and 28 who express their love and hate for current trends via any legitimate outlet.” Meaning you’ve got to be a working fashion journalist, blogger, etc. to be considered. Casting will take place the first week of November.
We have a feeling that this show is either going to be amazing or really, really boring. Since Ofir and co. found Snooki, we’re going to bet on the former.

Last Night’s Parties: Jon Hamm’s Hat, Matthew Williamson’s Book, Dries Van Noten’s New Digs
Thursday’s party circuit was dedicated to the men of fashion. Oh, and Jon Hamm.
First up was legend Dries Van Noten, who opened his new boutique on Bergdorf Goodman’s third floor. The space, which currently houses his masterful, ’50s-inspired Fall 2010 collection, is decorated much like an apartment, with a definite oriental flair. “It’s inspired by what we have in Paris,” he told me. “It’s very personal–I wanted to make it look more like an apartment. Like you’re visiting someone’s private world.” There’s a mix of contemporary, mid-century, and Chinoise pieces.

Awesome Accessories at Ann Taylor for Spring
We stopped by the Ann Taylor spring preview at the top of the Gramercy Hotel last night and while the collection didn’t knock our socks off (despite their J.Crew-ification), the accessories did. There were shots of lime green throughout the collection, basics that will be good staples for the office, and a few pieces–silk blouses (since we’re on a silk blouse kick lately), a tiered lace skirt, and some good J Brand Houlihan cargo knock-offs–stood out. But it was the accessories that shone. Particularly the burlap and leather strappy sandals with a thick stacked heel and the estate-style jewelry.
Elizabeth Banks, Katrina Bowden, Olivia Palermo stopped by to preview the collection as well, and Au Revoir Simone provided the live soundtrack.
Take a look at the accessories, and some standout pieces for spring.
