Ten Questions For Project Runway: Season Finale Edition
By Cheryl Wischhover
*Yep, I’m saying who won. Read at your own peril.*
1) How much did the reunion segment make you miss Casanova and Peach? I’m so excited for Peach that she has a gay following. That’s a sure sign that you’re awesome.
2) Who wants to try gold metallic cat eyes after watching Collier Strong make up Mondo’s girls?
3) Was Andy’s putty-colored bathing suit as disturbing as Tim said? Ugly maybe, but I wasn’t necessarily disturbed by it.
4) When is Jessica Simpson going to get a proper stylist? The girl is stunning, but that whole ensemble was a tragedy, from hair to shoes. It looked even worse on TV than when I saw it live during NYFW. That’s all I’m going to say.
5) Did you like Gretchen’s palette? I really hated it. But I’m biased against earth tones in general. Oh, and I’m biased against Gretchen, too.
6) Wasn’t it obvious immediately that Andy was doomed?
7) Who smiled while watching Mondo’s collection walk? No one does high-waisted patterned “crazy” pants like this man. But…would you wear them?
8) Now Nina’s saying the clothes are too young? What the hell is the ideal perfect age? All season everything was deemed too old.
9) Ooh, how juicy was the judges’ deliberation? Michael was getting downright loud at Heidi.
10) Can someone please wake me up when Mondo is the winner? I know, I know. I heard all of Michael’s arguments. It makes sense. But I’m still ticked off.
11) Extra bonus question: What on earth am I going to do on Thursday nights now?

I still think Michael C. should have gone. If you look at his collection on nymag.com, it’s quite beautiful. He just froze when picking the looks to show the judges. Such a shame.
I haven’t seen it yet but Gretchen has really unfortunate taste for bad earth tones, and I love earth tones! She makes me wanna redecorate my bedroom in primary color.
Mondo was robbed by the ghost of Stevie Nicks. Wait, she’s not dead yet… but her style is.
Mondo was the clear winner. Such a shame they picked drab and dull Gretchen
Nina convinced everyone that Gretchen understood the direction of fashion because her clothes were easy and, I think mainly because she had half hearted Celine and chloe references with the leather tops and shoes. Mondo designed so many more successful peices and they were actually chic! All the women on the panel could wear Mondos collection. I don’t know ‘the girl’ that Gretchen was designing for.
That ending ruined the whole season for me. Gretchen’s line reminded me of suburban housewife chic. Earthtones? My mother would like her earthtones. My mother is pushing sixty.
I did not think there was a clear winner. I was actually a bit disappointed by both Mondo and Andy; Andy lost his edge, as the judges said, and Mondo’s collection did read a bit juvenile. They did brilliant stuff during the competition, Mondo just blew me away sometimes. Not only the colors and patterns, but the way his clothes always fit was PERFECT. But they both took a few steps back for the final runway. The stupid head gear they both made their models wear took away from their work. On the other hand, Gretchen surprised me – I thought she was going to be a train wreck and she wasn’t. But wearable??! Tell me who is going to wear those knitted granny panties, Michael and Nina??? Gretchen listened to what the judges said, which helped her a lot in the end.
Mondo would have won had he shelved or modified that polka-dot dress. MK would have been won over had that happened. Quite petty, methinks.
I don’t think Mondo’s collection was too young; maybe the judges are too old. Gretchen’s palette and fabric choices were BORING. They’d look good at a mall store. Couture? Not in this lifetime. I wonder if ANY of the designers this season are really the cut above that makes a grand couturier. Talented designers for boutique wear. Haute couture? Not even Mondo though I adore him.
Its kind of sad that someone who basically creates urbanoutfitters clothes is considered to be creative and wins this show. Remember when this show was about unique designers, creative people?
I wish they had shown us who, even if begrudgingly, changed their mind to make Gretchen the winner and how. At least from the footage we saw, both Heidi and Jessica (ughhh, so with you on #4) were so staunchly on Team Mondo and it seems like what we didn’t see is one of them being coerced into coming around to the other side. In clear splits like that, they should have Tim be the tiebreaker. But only if he would have chosen Mondo :-)
Great questions and points to ponder! This whole season has been perplexing, to say the least. My theory: Mondo’s aesthetic was just too similar to Seth Aaron, last season’s winner. They are both so unique, and yet their similarities would have made a back-to-back win kind of… strange.
I personally believe that was the real underlying reason why Mondo didn’t win, the similarity between his work and last season’s Seth Aaron.
Andy might have lost his edge, but I still loved his collection..I would have bought so many of those pieces in a heartbeat..
Michael C is amazing, I wish he would have been able to participate in the runway shows.
this is what I dont understand…at one point nina says,”i vote for both gretchen and mondo to be the winners”….in a tie situation, how does that turn into gretchen winning when she clearly stated they should both win? that should have given mondo the edge in a tie breaker
What exactly are the guidelines they use to judge the winner I wonder. I don’t think they have any. It seems to be a matter of personal taste. In my opinion great fashion has timeless appeal. In twenty years you can pick out a piece by Mondo and it will still be fabulous and wearable. Gretchens hideous and boring ensembles are a dime a dozen and won’t be recognizable, nor will they ever be collectors pieces. The only thing memorable about her show was the models hair. This was a battle over originality vs. trendiness, and trendiness obviously won. The polka dot dress wasnt my cup of tea-but it was a statement piece that a supermodel says she woud wear. So it has some cred (unlike the diaper shorts).I was flabbergasted. I, too, smiled during the entirety of Mondos show. It was whimsical and wonderfully styled. Too young? what a joke. Have they heard of Betsy Johnson,Richie Rich, or Jeremy Scott ..to name a few.
michael c’s collection was BEAUTIFUL…and so was ivy’s. http://www.elle.com/Runway/Ready-to-Wear/Spring-2011-RTW/PROJECT-RUNWAY/PROJECT-RUNWAY#mode=fullscreen;slide=131;
Mondo losing made me want to boycott Project Runway. I understand Nina and Micheal’s argument on why Gretchen should win, but Mondo brought something new to the table. Who cares if it isn’t “now,” maybe it’s the future. Isn’t that what we want? To be surprised?
