Adventures In Copyright: The Bunny Bag Edition
By Elizabeth Jaime
Reader Angie tipped us off to his rather upsetting Adventures In Copyright.
It seems that See by Chloe has blatantly ripped off Mandy Coon’s “Ginny Bunny Bag.” Both bags are black leather, and in the shape of bunny. We wonder though, how the quality of the leather compares among the two bags. The only noticeable difference between the two is that the original bag has a gold chain while the See by Chloe bag has a wrist band.
Either way, it’s always disappointing to see big labels rip off smaller, independently-owned labels. Especially when the knocked-off piece looks exactly the same as the original. Then again, both bags kind of remind us of those coveted Giles dinosaurs bags.

I mean, that looks NOTHING like these bags. If we’re just talking about bunny bags in general, I don’t think any of these people can be credited for being the original.
I had a bunny bag very suspiciously like that one, that I loved. I put my pj’s in it and carried it arould with me all the time. I was four. You’ll be relieved to know it wasn’t black leather.
This thing is ugly. Why would anyone want to copy it? Sad.
I have a hard time believing anything Chloe involved would deliberately knock off a designer since it is a company of integrity and enough inspiration in its own right. It looks like Stella got there before both of them. Usually the big companies to rip off younger talent are places like forever 21,or license companies. So this is a tough call. Once something is put out there in the creative collective it rubs off on every artist in the realm.
You’re worried about the quality of the leather in a novelty bunny bag?
If we’re comparing two bags that look almost identical, yes.
I don’t think a bunny is not enough an original idea that it couldn’t be lifted. It’s just who did it first.
Now, if someone jocked Gizmo, that would be a problem…
