Now we know what’s happening to Karl Lagerfeld. The collection, that is.

According to Unbeige, Lagerfeld is developing a mass collection for Macy’s, which will include everything from jeans to party dresses. A source confirms as much to Fashionista.

Lagerfeld will be the third designer in a series to do a diffusion line for the department store. The first was, Kinder Aggugini, the second will be Matthew Williamson. Lagerfeld’s looks are slated to arrive in stores in the fall of 2011.

i always assumed he was above this

Above this? He already did a line for H&M a few years back – where have you been??

Egads, if it’s anything like Madonna’s collection for Macy’s I am truly scared. That pleather jacket for $78 she had in her collection should have cost $7.80 as it looked no better than something found at Forever 21.

You’re comparing Karl to Madonna?

seriously…i have a pleather jacket from h&m…on sale for $38…kinda in love with it

everybody licenses their name its great for both ends…KARL and MACYS. I just hope its worth waiting in the line outside the store on the day it debuts.

ok. karl acts like he’s so high and mighty. a few years back (or even seasons for that matter), if it were another designer doing this, he would have looked down on them. well i guess even the “greatest” sell out eventually.

I would’ve thought that like a decade back, but we are in serious financial sh*t! If you want art and design to survive you have to go where the money is. He did H&M about 5 years ago and it was a serious hit. If he comes off arrogant I can handle it coming from a genius.

I love the high end designer/low end store collabs, but I think people are particularly suspect of Karl doing it (even though he did it before with H&M, was he the first to do it?) because he’s been quoted a few times saying that if you can’t afford something, you have no right to covet it. He’s always talking about how high art and expensive goods are wonderful, but they’re meaningless and it’s silly to save up for things you can’t afford. It’s easy to see how designing for lower end brand fits within that ideology in his mind, but from other viewpoints I can also see how it would seem like a disingenuous move, I suppose.

Whenever there are negative comments written about elite designers designing for a middle class store,it just really makes me wonder….Do people like to be kept average?,Are people afraid of improvement?…. I mean whats the point of design if it can’t be distributed amongst the masses?! I also wonder if they are the same people who are complaining about mass marketers knocking off designers? I’m just saying……

i’m not excited…macy’s already has cheap clothes that aren’t worth their price tags…no need to add to the overflow

I shop at Macy’s often and although I love Karl Largerfeld Chanel designs on the runway, I feel a bit bittersweet about this. I think its good that the designer are making their clothing accessible to everyone, but at the same time it kind of takes away from the exclusivity of their work.
