Crazy, Insane, Breaking News: Tavi and Jane Pratt–You Know, Sassy‘s Jane Pratt–Are Launching a Magazine
By Lauren Sherman
Tavi Gevinson announced on her blog yesterday that she is launching a magazine with legendary editor Jane Pratt, founder of Sassy and Jane.
As Jane Pratt is my own personal Jesus and Sassy is the reason I became interested in fashion as a 5th grader, this news fascinates/excites me. Gevinson promises that it “won’t be Sassy (or the rebirth of Sassy, or Sassy 2.0).” I’m imagining a ‘zine-like publication that barely relies on advertising, given the fact that advertising was always Pratt’s biggest problem. (As is the case with any publication that voices a real, honest opinion.)
At the same time, the whole thing makes me a little uncomfortable, given that Tavi wasn’t even alive when Sassy was still good. But I guess I wasn’t alive when the Beatles were together, and I still liked them as a 15-year-old.
Hopefully they’ll at least bring back Cute Band Alert.

What do you guys think about this? I’m curious.

im not sure… i feel like it could go either way. It could either be the biggest joke of the fashion world or it could be brilliant and fresh. I’m curious as to what other people think.

I don’t think they are aiming to make it a fashion magazine thus wont become the joke of the fashion world. I think it could be fun, I hope they dont take it too seriously. Or well, that they do, but the magazine itself doesn’t take itself too seriously.
I think they are both so smart, honest and fabulous that girls will be lucky to have this. Especially in the age of Cosmo, and other “how to make a boy like you” magazines.
I think (and hope) it will help with the current state of “Lose 10 lbs! Look pretty!” fashion magazines… the vapid, shallow nonsense we see out there today. I’m hopeful.

I LOVED Jane, although I never read Sassy. Crossing my fingers that it’s good.

Sad.
I love this idea! Both Jane and Tavi have been/are on the vanguard and the concept of a teenager and a 40-something year old collaborating on something is interesting. I think they both have great things to bring to the table – I hope this turns out great.
i say. “go on girls”.
I was just on Tavi blog just a few days ago….and I have to admit she got a little “SASSY” tongue on her; all by herself. So with the help of Ms. Pratt, I believe these two can do no wrong!
I’m optimistic, but the nostalgia factor is going to be hard for me to hurdle. As we learned from that horrible excerpt from the Shannen Doherty book, some things are better left in the awesome, paint splattered, angsty, kinky haired past.
Well put.
So pumped for this to happen. Love love love love it.
i am hoping that this will be a move toward more curated editorial projects and away from blogs.
Ugh, demonize me all you want but I find Tavi amateur and unprofessional. She needs to grow up, get a college degree, start as an assistant, and come back to the magazine business when she’s 22.
Bit harsh? Also…I sense bitterness. How is she unprofessional?
Exactly.. she runs a blog… I suppose she isn’t conducting her blogging with the dignity Matt feels would befit her station.
I was happy to see so many statements of support and so few bitter denunciations of Tavi.

I think this could turn out to be really interesting. I wasn’t around when Sassy was but I’ve read a few of my sisters’ issues. This could turn out really well and Tavi is the perfect person to spearhead it.

such a great chance :)love it!

i dont think i will love this magazine or even read it for that matter. but since fashionista and other fashion sites seem to post a lot in the topic of Tavi, then i’m such i will hear a lot about it. so depending on the reviews i might come around to like it (or hate it)
seems totally backwards to go from online to print.

When is Tavi ever going to find time to do her homework? Tavi – too cool for school perhaps?
great chance , enjoy it
great chance , enjoy it
I have no idea how Tavi is also going to school and doing all this but sure, more power to her!

Tavi obviously has an above-average intellligence for a 15-year old, but she is exactly that. Her ideas, angst, dissatisfaction with the status quo, etc., are the same ideas intelligent 15-year olds have been having for decades. Maybe it’s getting rarer in today’s society, so I laud her for trying to bring that back to the mainstream. All the same, she isn’t quite the revolutionary character some people make her out to be–creatively or intellectually. Like some of the posts suggest, I hope she uses this exposure to go to a first-rate college where she can mature her ideas and THEN she might really be a force.
OOOPS *intelligence*
I love seeing Tavi stepping up!
GO YOUNG ONES!
When Tavi sat on the front row of Dior’s show wearing that absurd crepe paper bow she called a hat, thereby abstructing the view of people sitting behind her, all I could think was “What a brat.” I’ll say one thing, she has balls and probably will go far. I’d like to see her get a proper education, if not academically, than at least socially. As in don’t be so full of yourself that you don’t have any consideration or regard for other people. Had I been sitting behind her at the Dior show, I think I would have ripped the damned thing off her head.

Jane Pratt should not be anyone’s “personal Jesus”. She is a horrible person, who takes credit for everyone else’s ideas. Sorry to burst your bubble.
I guess I really missed out because I never looked at even 1 copy of SASSY. That said, I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED Jane! I think Jane and Tavi are awesome and I am really looking forward to a magazine I can love and I really believe they will deliver something I will enjoy! I am burned out on the mags. available right now so I don’t look at any of them and instead get my fashion fix online. I miss having a magazine to love and look forward to!
I read on the blog that they are seeking unpaid contributions. In other words: Go to hell, freelancers and professional writers.
