Forever 21 is headed across the pond to compete with UK high street staples like Topshop and Primark. Their first outpost opens in Birmingham today, to be followed by stores in London and Dublin. This, on the heels of the opening of their 91,000 square foot flagship store in Times Square. The recession has been kind to Forever 21.

“The customer always knows they will get great value at Forever 21, so the fact that it’s a difficult time now just..makes our concept potentially more appealing to people,” executive vice president Larry Meyer told the BBC.

But the Daily Mail is griping that while the UK prices are still cheap, they are significantly marked up from their prices in the US. The paper’s story, which ran with the headline “Chic, but not THAT cheap: US High Street favourite Forever 21 hits UK (but why are prices 25 per cent higher here?)” points out that “a dotted abstract skirt that sells for the equivalent of £11.08 in the US comes in at £13.80 in the UK, a mark-up of 24.5per cent,” and that “a faux leather jacket with a studded leather collar is £39.80 in this country, which is some 33per cent more than the £29.76 in the US and Canada.”

When asked about the pricing differential, a spokesperson for Forever 21 told the Mail, “When pricing our ranges we do not simply replace the dollar sign, we carefully consider all the local influencing factors such VAT and import costs.”

Of course, this is a problem we’re all too familiar with.

In this video series, exclusive to Fashionista, Victoria’s Secret models reveal what their lives were like pre-Angeldom. First up is the pillowy Candice Swanepoel:

Art for Fashion: The CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Awards are on Monday and artist Rachel Feinstein is whipping up some very special trophies for the winners. There will also be lots of celebs like Carey Mulligan, Leighton Meester, Kim Kardashian, Karlie Kloss and Seth Meyers. {WWD}

Erdem to Match: Buzzed about British designer Erdem has developed a capsule collection for UK retailer Matches. The gorgeous five-piece collection of printed dresses is available in stores and online today. Let’s all get one and be matchers. {Vogue UK}

What Would Rachel Wear? Looks like the Brits love Rachel Bilson as much as we do. This shopping roundup answers the question, “What would Rachel Bilson wear?” I would be lying if I said I hadn’t asked myself the same question when in need of some style inspiration. {Telegraph UK}

An anonymous fashion publicist,tweeting under the name @NoBtotheS, is becoming a real industry force.

WWD reported today that the Twitter star’s comment re: Google launching an e-commerce platform might actually be true. (Google’s entrance into the fashion and retail realm should come as no surprise. Their latest efforts include throwing a fashion industry party next week DJed by Becka Diamond and the Misshapes, and launching project GStyle during the summer.)

Anyways, @NoBtotheS, also known as No Bullshit, typically tweets about much less serious topics. In honor of our new hero, we’ve listed her top ten Tweets. Ever.

Organic color makeup still sort of has a crunchy reputation. (Think nondescript packaging and weird-smelling ingredients.) Luckily, more and more companies and beauty entrepreneurs are offering increasingly luxe organic lines. And Kirsten Kjaer, creator of Kjaer Weis cosmetics, just significantly upped the ante.

Kirsten is a Danish-born, New York based makeup artist with almost 20 years of experience in the industry. Kirsten saw a lot of bad skin while doing makeup for models–rashes, break-outs, eye irritation–and she started getting complaints that certain products were causing “allergic” reactions.

After about seven years in development, Kjaer Weis is the fruit of what is obviously a labor of love. Passionately dedicated to creating a green product, Kirsten’s line is made in Italy and is 95% organic, earning her the CCPB organic certification (which is quite a big deal if you’re an organic brand–organic standards are very high in Europe).

The Isabella Blow book war just won’t quit. And the authors of the competing biographies–Tom Sykes, who cowrote Blow by Blow with Isabella’s widower Detmar, and Lauren Goldstein Crowe who wrote Isabella Blow: A Life in Fashion–continue to use the fashion blogosphere to duke it out.

Crowe has spoken out again, though this time, instead of responding to Syke’s latest outrage, she’s taking issue with one of the sites covering the saga, lady blog Jezebel.

Seems Crowe didn’t like Jenna Sauers’ implication, as she recapped the back-and-forth on Jezebel, that the authors were simply drumming up publicity at Isabella Blow’s expense. “Far be it from us mere bloggers to act like some kind of voice of morality here, but a talented and troubled woman died and all these people can think about is their petty little publicity-chasing book-selling feud?” Sauers wrote.

So Crowe sent a response to us and Racked, titled, “A Letter to Jezebel.” Here it is, in full:

How strange of you to recall, step-by-step, the grisly tale between myself and Tom Sykes (“Competing Isabella Blow Biographers Attack Each Other,” November, 11, 2010) but when it comes to my completely coherent clarification to decide to “act like some voice of morality” and point out that “a trouble woman died,” and accuse us both of pandering for publicity’s sake.

Victoria’s Secret put on their annual runway show spectacular last night and, as usual, the highly produced event was an assault of sparkles, feathers, cleavage and legs for miles. There was a “Tough Love” theme that involved lingerie with a hard motocross edge followed by “Game On” which featured Isabeli as a weightlifter, and then “Country Girl” where Angels got to where wings made of straw and wheat. The “Pink Planet” segment–the VS Pink portion of the show–seemed like a tribute to Rainbow Brite, which was not a bad thing.

The front row and after party was packed with a very amusing range of celebs including some fashion ones. Carine Roitfeld, Alexander Wang and Zac Posen were all there. So was Adrien Grenier and Vin Diesel. Vin Diesel was very enthusiastic about the show and on his feet for most of it. Not that we can blame him. There was a lot of hot ridiculousness to be gawked at.

Here are some of the most insane get-ups from the show.

This morning we received a tip from a fashion industry insider–who wishes to remain anonymous–claiming a cure for bedbugs. Well, not a cure, but a repellent.

According to our tipster, whom we trust and respect, Belegenza Timeless Skin Moisturize–which retails for $40 on Belegenza.com–keeps bedbugs far away from your skin. (Of course, if your bed is already infested, this means nothing. But if you go into a bedbug-ridden store and try on some clothes, you might be saved.) Our tipster says he received this information from a chemist who is famous for inventing an over-the-counter acne remedy that many of us use every day.

Stewart + Brown was created in 2002 by business partners, and life partners, Karen Stewart and Howard Brown. The ethical fashion brand mixes the couple’s respect for nature with their love of design. Everything is made from green fabrics like organic cotton and hemp jersey, as well as Mongolian cashmere.

For Spring 2011, the label presented a collection of long dresses, harem pants, and some comfortable-looking tops. They stuck to an earthly color palette: greens, light browns, with a few pops of primary color.

Silk button downs. Vintage belts. And short-sleeved army jackets. These are the pieces we want for spring, and sure enough Madewell is offering them up in an irresistible fashion.

“We [topped the skirts] with jackets so it all looked easier,” the brand’s creative director, Kin Ying Lee, told me at this morning’s presentation. The vacation-inspired tees–remnants of those 1970s “Virginia is for Lovers” souvenirs–also made the soft, pretty florals and silks look less precious. Several of the belts used to tie the outfits together were vintage, and will be available in select Madewell stores.
