There’s a strange rumor going around–which we believe stems from a FrenchTribune.com article–that Tom Ford is designing the next H&M collection.

While we’d love for this to be true–Lanvin x H&M proved to be beautiful and impressively constructed–it’s a little hard to believe, given Ford’s current ethos.

In the December issue of American Vogue, Ford confesses his disdain for everything fast–particularly the way runway show footage is distributed via the internet. “I do not understand everyone’s need to see everything online the day after a show,” he told Sarah Mower. “I don’t think it ultimately serves the customer, which is the whole point of my business—not to serve journalists or the fashion system. To put something out that’s going to be in a store in six months, and to see it on a starlet, ranked in US magazine next week? My customer doesn’t want to wear the same thing she saw on a starlet!”

What’s more, Ford’s clothes have gotten more expensive–and more couture-like. Would he go downmarket? Especially at this point in time?

You can call Tom Ford many things, but we don’t think “snob” is one of them. So maybe the answer is yes. Maybe he’s looking forward to the attention–and making all different types of women feel sexy.

i’m reallly don’t like lanvin for h&m

I agree with you, Lauren. Tom Ford has mentioned several times that he misses the ability to impact cultural trends since stepping down from Gucci, but I have a feeling that it won’t be H & M due to their low-to-middling quality.

I’m going to go out on a branch and make an even wilder guess that it might be for Talbots. Talbots is creatively lead by a CFDA-inducted designer (Michael Smaldone); but more importantly, Julianne Moore (a Ford muse and long-time friend) will be featured in their 2011 resort/spring advertising. Irrespective of what people think of Talbots’s past styling, they have always been known for the high quality of clothing construction and tailoring. The customer age group of Talbots is synonymous with the age range Ford hopes to attract to his couture line, which a portion of the Talbots customer might be considered an easy reach. It’s more of a beneficial relationship for both companies, and reinforces Ford’s thinking at this time without compromise.

Very interesting idea. Lower budget collaborations don’t have to be the equivalent of fast food. You can get quality at a much lower price point if the designer is clever about style and fabric selection. This is a challenge for a good designer and I certainly think that Renaissance man Ford is up for it. It would be amazing to see Julieanne Moore as the face of the collection – intelligent, stylish and brave – everything you could want.

Sounds like bollocks to me. Why would someone who’s gone against the tide in terms of press and coverage be willing to do the complete opposite? I’d buy his whole collection but I honestly hope this is untrue.

I can’t understand why so many good designers want to make so many disgusting collection for H&M..
My philosophy is LES IS BETTER!..so why they don’t start be pure ..and easy..is more simple for everyone.. Lanvin f H&M was really bad as other collaboration!

I love Tom Ford. I think he is really trying to be a luxurious old-world couturier, and hearken back to the time of slow, take-your-time, polished designing. Would a Tom Ford x H&M collection blow my mind? Of course. Will he do it? Doubtful.

…More importantly, when will he make his next film? A Single Man was sophisticated, heart-breaking, and stylish.

This would be cool, but would he want to downgrade his name at a time when he is trying to make it worth even more? Although the Lanvin collaboration was successful and had lines of people waiting for the doors to open, it may not work for every designer. Thanks for the insight and the heads up on some possible huge excitement.

I hope to all goodness this is just rumor and not true.

Tom Ford has always been ubercool, ubersexy, and uberchic, whether it has been for Gucci, YSL, or his own eponymous collections. To do a capsule diffusion line for H&M would be kind for the masses but not smart for his target market, or his fans. And I would just CRINGE if this came to pass and pass on this venture like a speeding bullet train right into the actual Tom Ford store, where I could get my wares un-dumbed down and served straight up, authentically AND fabulously.
