Brian Atwood Cried and Blake Lively Owned up to Her Louboutin Obsession at Last Night’s Footwear News Achievement Awards
By Dhani Mau
Blake Lively loves her some Christian Louboutin. Last night, celebrities, designers and buyers gathered at MoMa for the Footwear News Achievement Awards, which the host, Fairchild Fashion Group’s Michael Atmore, described as “a tiny bit of Golden Globes…You never know what’s going to happen.”
Honorees included Charlotte Olympia for Emerging Talent, Ivanka Trump for Launch of the Year, Toms Shoes and Vibram for Brands of the Year, Brian Atwood for Designer of the Year, and finally, Christian Louboutin for Person of the Year.
Jessica Alba, who presented Blake Mycoskie’s award for Toms, jumped on the suit trend in Dolce & Gabbana; Ivanka Trump is gorgeous and came off quite smart and business-minded; Charlotte Dellal looked amazing as usual and buddied up with Olivia Palermo. The sweetest moment was Brian Atwood’s mom Yolanda presenting his award and him tearing up during his acceptance. However, the most memorable part of the evening was easily Blake Lively’s ridiculously rapturous and glowing introduction to Christian Louboutin.
If buying 40 pairs of his shoes at a sample sale wasn’t enough of a declaration of Blake’s love for the French footwear designer, this was. Most of the other presenters rattled off a short, predictable script about how great the recipient is and how influential their career has been. Blake Lively, wearing an amazing Prabal Gurung cocktail dress (with Louboutins, of course), made a speech full of anecdotes and genuine declarations of love and obsession for the shoes and the man himself. I’ve honestly never seen anyone in any awards show so visibly happy and excited just to present an award to someone.
“Like any addiction, the first step is admitting you have a problem. I own so many pairs I should be institutionalized,” she began. (Funny, because that actually happened to her Gossip Girl character this week!) She explained how lucky she felt to call Christian a friend and how she had never been more disarmed when meeting a person before. She told a story of how she studied up on Godard films and “obscure French references” before meeting him for dinner, only to have him reference the cartoon Ratatouille as a representation of the die hard French restaurant business. My favorite anecdote was of how she (not a stylist!) once called in shoe samples while in Paris and Christian delivered them to her hotel himself via Vespa. “Life is a fairytale, so I live in one,” he once told her.
Lively’s enthusiasm and adoration for the designer was evident and understandable and it seemed the feeling was mutual. Christian said in his acceptance speech that he is often asked, “What do I think about when designing a shoe?” He then gestured to Blake and said, “I just have to think about her.” Aww.
