It almost felt like a cruel joke on Mother Nature’s part when we headed out to a lingerie launch in last night’s below-freezing weather, but the gorgeous goods on display were well worth braving the chill. La Perla’s Upper East Side flagship was the site of an intimate (pun intended) cocktail event for the presentation of Jean Paul Gaultier’s Collection Createur—a line the French design legend crafted exclusively for the luxury lingerie label.

Fred Butler‘s origami accessories have landed her commissions on the pages of i-D, Dazed & Confused, Vogue and V magazine not to mention onto Lady Gaga’s head in the diva’s video for “Telephone.” Photographed last year by Nick Knight, the soft-spoken prop stylist turned accessories designer is a longtime London fashion scene standout with her unwavering head-to-toe monochromatic outfits. Launched in 2008, Butler’s line of colorful op-art mutations have been worn by musicians Patrick Wolf, Little Boots, Beth Ditto, La Roux and Skunk Anastasie. Stocked at London’s jewelry cache Kabiri and with a hush-hush high-street collaboration in the works, Fred takes a few minutes to talk to Fashionista about her music-fashion collaborations, designing in London and a new era of dressing.

But now they make other things and sell them on their cool new e-commerce site, literally called “Things!” At our panel discussion, Jeff Halmos told us they wanted to do things other than fashion. Highlights include playing cards with famous people like Woody Allen and Barack Obama on them, an exclusive Moleskin notebook and a leather wallet with a penholder and notepad inside. {Shipley & Halmos}

You didn’t think we were talking about Anna Wintour and US Vogue, did you?
No, it’s Vogue Italia that is going transparent. The mag is inviting readers in for a sort of open house to get a rare behind-the-scenes look at how the magazine is put together, and the chance to meet with editor in chief Franca Sozzani as well as boldface names in Italian design like Donatella Versace and Angela Missoni.
“The Vogue Experience” celebrates the launch of Sozzani’s new book, I Capricci Della Moda (“The whims of fashion”), which is a collection of her blog posts on the mag’s site where she details everything from her love of Uggs in a blizzard to her musings on fashion and feminism. Apparently the editrix has been criticized for the stunt and took to her blog today to write, “It upsets me that some people think that my doing this is just a commercial thing or making Vogue too democratic.”
“Vogue” and “democratic” are two words we never expected to hear in the same sentence. But Sozzani’s got good intentions.

LONDON–Fashionista by birth, painter by training, jeweler at heart: Natasha Collis is a soft-spoken brunette who seems she will forever be 23. The daughter of creative director of Browns, Caroline Burstein, and granddaughter of boutique founder, the legendary Mrs. B., Natasha has quite a reputation to live up to.
Yet the petite jewelry maker has found her own path: tucked away on the Northern end of Ibiza, in a 400 year old studio, she spends day and night making tiny, one-off jewelry pieces. Based in St Miguel, a village full of artisans, her lifestyle is light-years away from the reputation the Spanish Island has for all-night boozing.
And her jewelry reflects this: no bling, no loud nonsense nor flashy logo. Only intimate, delicate arrangements.

–Vogue Italia EIC Franca Sozzani heaped high praise on the footwear that’s more often met with disdain by fashion folks. Sozzani, stuck in a blizzard-hit Paris (can I be stuck in a blizzard in Paris, too?), blogged about the necessity of Uggs and down puffer coats, items that might be otherwise considered fashion faux pas.

Since 2002 Vanity Fair has put out an annual “International Best Dressed List” which honors 10 men and 10 women for their superior sartorial choices. The list also inducts hall of famers, cites first ladies, couples, professional and siblings who have dressed to impress that year.
The list is created by “an international committee of fashion authorities,” and “has as its purpose the maintenance of a continuous historical record of fashion as embodied, defined, and interpreted by influential and prominent personalities each year.” While Vanity Fair has put out this list since 2002, it’s been around since 1940, when it was created by fashion pioneer Eleanor Lambert, who also created the CFDA. We know these things about this list because a little birdie who is close with a member of the “international committee of fashion authorities” slipped us the polling documents. And we scanned them in for your viewing pleasure, of course.
What you’ll see are the instructions and suggestions for consideration for Vanity Fair‘s 2010 international best dressed list.
Here are our observations:
- Of the final 20 best dressed men and women who made the cut (see the final list here), six were write-ins, not “suggested for consideration.” They are: Samantha Cameron (First Lady, U.K.), Nora Ephron (writer, director), Carey Mulligan (actress), Alec Baldwin (actor), Javier Barden (actor), Jay Penske (chairman and C.E.O., Mail.com Media Corp.
-People we think are really well dressed who didn’t make the cut? Alexa Chung, Lou Doillon, and Tilda Swinton jump out. And then of course there are the folks who are nominated who don’t seem to fit the bill. But we won’t go there.
What are your observations?

As Oprah and her audience can attest, iPads make great gifts. So do laptops, e-readers, smart phones and other fun technology. But perhaps even more fun (not to mention less expensive) are the accessories out there to go along with these gadgets. Honestly, I’m not sure which I’d be more excited to unwrap–an actual iPad or a snake-embossed Rebecca Minkoff case for it. (Ok, probs an iPad.)
As more and more designers are smartly expanding into this market, there are now a plethora of fashionable ways to pretty-up your new toys, the sleekest of which still tend to look drab and impersonal. There are Mulberry patent leather laptop cases, Marc by Marc headphones, Tory Burch Kindle sleeves and so much more. Click through for the best tech gifts.

Australian designer Elliot Ward-Fear gave Frockwriter an exclusive look at his AW10 lookbook, which is monochrome heavy with a side of kooky kitsch. While most of the looks are innovative and exciting, one pair of pants caught me way off guard.
From the front they’re fuzzy pink trousers with white trim, but from the back, well…they’re a whole other beast.

Our mystery columnist and uber Twitterer, @nobtothes, has made another attempt at confusing the fashion crowd.
Several fashion journalists and PRs–all active on Twitter–have received holiday cards from the elusive character. The return address on each correspondence is different, but all direct us to luxury storefronts. One return address says Burberry, another Cartier, another Hermes…mysterious!
Seems like s/he isn’t giving up on anonymity any time soon!
