Archive for December 2010

It’s the holiday season, which means it’s time for presents and parties. Which also means it’s time to find something special for your mom, sister, friend…and yourself–that will add a spark of specialness to those holiday frocks.

We’d be perfectly happy with any adornment from Tacori 18k925, particularly the ruby red cocktail ring.

For our friends, we’d choose the edgy Black Onyx style.

And mom? Definitely one of the Lemon Drop Quartz pendants.

A new addition to the Tacori family, 18k925 is a bit playful, with colorfilled gemstones and unique details. The 18k gold and .925 silver metal combination that makes these pieces bold, fun and–most importantly–wearable.

And priced from $250 to $2,000, a bauble or two won’t break the bank. But they will make you feel like a million dollars.

Tacori 18k925 is now available at the Bloomingdale’s New York Flagship and Bloomingdales.com.

Target’s newest designer collaboration with William Rast–Justin Timberlake’s label with designer Trace Ayala–hits stores December 19.

While Target is the grand-daddy of designer collaborations, the insane hype surrounding Lanvin for H&M (it keeps on going as folks are asking for over $1,500 for tees on eBay) threatens to overshadow Target’s latest GO International designer collaboration. But it shouldn’t. Because William Rast for Target is not only more affordable than Lanvin for H&M, but the pieces are also really wearable. William Rast’s whole country vibe really makes sense now what with Canadian tuxedos being “in” and all. And our friends at Racked raise another good point re. William Rast for Target over Lanvin for H&M: “[B]ig name designer collabs have become so ubiquitous and so well-publicized that when, say, you wear that Lanvin for H&M dress, everyone knows exactly where you got it and how much you paid. The problem is designers have stocked their high-low collaborations with statement styles—all the better for branding—which are instantly recognizable, making the wearer that-girl-in-the-high-low-collab-dress in the room, you know? The William Rast for Target collection…[doesn't] totally scream high-low collab.”

Stand outs include a high-waisted embellished skirt for $39.99, light wash chambray button-downs (my favorite) for $34.99 and faux-leather shorts for $39.99. Another nice thing about this collection? Lots of nice basics–like denim and plaid button-downs–for dudes, too.

Take a look.

Casting director Natalie Joos has been a fashion industry fixture for years, and a favorite subject of Tommy Ton and Scott Schuman.

But the March 2010 launch of her blog, Tales of Endearment, has made her star shine even brighter. A mix of vintage shopping expeditions with fashion friends and sneak peeks inside industry heavyweight’s closets, Tales of Endearment has been a Fashionista favorite from the start. And it’s made Natalie a “fashion household” name.

We wanted to know more about Natalie’s day job, why she started the blog, and where she gets all those amazing vintage pieces, so we popped by her home office one Monday in November while she was doing a casting.

Her Williamsburg apartment was clean and cool, but not pretentious, kind of like Natalie! And her cats, Mohammed and Tyson, made the whole visit even better. Here’s what she had to say:

Julianne, Calendar Girl: Actress Julianne Moore is among the mostly nude models in the Karl Lagerfeld-shot Pirelli calendar. She, however, is clothed, posing as Hera, the Greek goddess of marriage. At a recent press conference, Karl called himself “the visual version of Homer.” {WWD subscription required}

Hillary Swank to Host Fashion Game Show? File this under things that make no sense. Oscar winner Hillary Swank is apparently developing a game show for the CW where fashion diehards are tested on their knowledge of fashion trivia and such. We guess Hillary dresses ok most of the time, but never would have guessed she’d end up hosting a fashion television series. Would you watch? {The Cut}

Alexa’s Holiday Surprise: If you didn’t get a chance to snag Alexa Chung’s blink-and-you-missed-it line for Madewell, you have one more chance before the holidays. Madewell is releasing one more piece tomorrow–a long tunic version of the bat tee. Alexa has even offered suggestions for styling: “Wear with tights and a grandad cardigan this winter or wear it to bed so you can look ace even as you sleep.” {People Style Watch}

Just when you thought Dov Charney was toning things down while his empire teetered on the edge of bankruptcy (his last ads showed him at hard at work on his laptop, fully clothed, with his two creative directors–albeit in bed), new print ads that appeared in the Village Voice and Vice show American Apparel models fully nude, bush included.

Of course, American Apparel’s latest ads don’t feature college freshmen as models. They’re illustrated. These ads mark a dramatic shift in the brand’s advertising, which has relied, since its inception, on ’70s-style Polaroid porn shots of lamé-clad real women in suggestive poses. The ads are still unmistakably American Apparel–’70s vibe, naked girls, suggestively posed, etc.,–but to go from using real models, a hallmark of the American Apparel brand, to illustrated ads might be a sign that the brand is investing in serious cost cutting measures, as Copyranter points out.
