Archive for December 2010

Media is evolving at the breakneck speed of Twitter and traditional print outlets and new media ones are constantly reorganizing and reshuffling mastheads to ensure that their publications continue to rake in advertisers and stay alive. The world of fashion media is no exception. This year there was so much playing of editorial musical chairs, we devised little flow charts to try to keep it all straight.

From Carine Roitfeld’s shocking departure from Vogue Paris to the fat-hating Marie Claire blogger who pissed just about everyone off, here are the top ten fashion media stories of the year.

My old boss introduced me to Jill Golden’s Flutter jewlery collection years ago–before it had even officially launched! Unsurprisingly, I’ve been a fan of Golden’s ever since. Her delicate necklaces, earrings, and cuffs are pretty enough to please the J.Crew fanatic in all of us, yet strong enough to pair with a piece from Eddie Borgo or Pamela Love.

Flutter’s been around for nearly three years, and Golden felt like now was the time to spruce up her website, FlutterNYC.com. Along with an expanded e-commerce section, which features everything from her classic Palermo necklace to a one-off brooch made with vintage stones (shown), the jeweler also asked several fashion editors, stylists, and designers to take part in the New Years edition of The Flutter Questionaire. Participants included Ally Hilfiger, Rebecca Minkoff, Teen Vogue‘s lovely Eva Chen, and yes, yours truly.

You caught me!” {Style Rookie}

Sleek and Stylish Tech Gadgets and Accessories

Wednesday, Dec 22, 2010 / 1:00 PM

Finally, the tech gods have shined upon us fashion types.

From the iPad and its multiple covers to woodgrain headphones, this season those who appreciate great form in their high-function gadgets will get what they’ve wished for.

We’re obsessed with the iPad, which lets us watch exclusives from out favorite fashion glossies–like Love and Interview–via a richly colored, high-definition screen. Using the iPad’s shopping apps, like those offered up by Gilt Groupe and Shop Style, is almost as good as seeing the clothes in person. But our favorite pastime? Watching old clips from Style with Elsa Klensch, CNN’s long-running fashion program, which sadly went off the air in 2000.

And of course, the sleek, minimalist physicality of the iPad isn’t lost on fashion-lovers. In fact, many of this season’s runways were inspired by clean lines and bold, graphic colors, which fit right in with the iPad and its accessories. If you would like to dress your tablet up, Stella McCartney, Chanel, Dooney & Bourke, Louis Vuitton, Oscar de la Renta, and more offer gorgeous covers that complement their current collections. McCartney’s for instance is black with a metal edging, and was designed in a gorgeous faux-leather.

But not every fashionable tech accessory–or fashion inspired by tech–is connected to the iPad. We’re really impressed with computer-generated graphics, and so are plenty of designers. From Christopher Kane to Erdem to Michael Angel to the late, great Alexander McQueen, out-of-this-world graphics are a huge part of today’s trends. And we have personal computers to thank.

There has been much speculation about who would fill Julie Gilhart‘s shoes as the next fashion director of Barneys New York. Lane Crawford’s Sarah Rutson and Vogue‘s Virginia Smith were both rumored to be up for the job, but chose not to leave their respective places of employment.

The newest name at the top of the short list? According to WWD, it’s Marie Claire accessories editor Taylor Tomasi Hill.

It’s an interesting choice on the part of newish Barneys New York CEO Mark Lee.

While New York, London, Milan and Paris will always be fashion mainstays, it seems Beijing (and China in general) is the next big fashion spot. Not only is it place where most designers produce much of their collections, but it has also become an important fast-growing market for luxury brands.

American Vogue has been focusing their business savvy on China lately. First the mag acknowledged the influx and import of Asian top models in a spread called “Asia Major,” last month, and most notably (and most recently) Anna Wintour took a biz trip to China which resulted in the announcement that Vogue will set up a Fashion Fund in China.

So it follows that fashion powerhouse, Prada, is focusing their attention on China, too.

There are some stars for whom the transition from small or silver screen to campaign model makes sense (i.e. Blake Lively for Chanel, Leighton Meester for Missoni). But Giovanni Ribisi was not the first name we’d think of to rep a campaign. Read more »
