Archive for December 2010

I don’t like to do a lot of end of year reflecting about anything, except maybe all the shoes I wish I had bought but didn’t (a girl can dream, right?), but 2010 has seen some major model mayhem.

2010 saw more diversity in the typically cookie-cutter world of modeling. Was it perfect? Of course not, but the modeling industry may be taking much needed steps into the right direction. The top models of 2010 came in all body types, genders, ethnicities, ages, and sexual orientations, proving that there’s a lot more to being a successful model than a symmetrical face and a size zero frame.

Click though to see our list of the models that made made it big in 2010.

It’s getting down to the wire, but that doesn’t mean your holiday gifts have to lack that personal touch. We’ve rounded up some of our favorite personalized gifts–from charms to monogrammed iPad cases to signet rings. We’d be psyched to get any of these goodies with our initials stamped on them.

Granted, some of these call for a bit more advanced planning, so keep them in mind for birthdays, too. And there’s always next year. (If you’re still stumped, don’t forget about our other gift guides!)

A few weeks ago, Seren van der Woodsen, er, Blake Lively landed a Chanel campaign. And now Blair, we mean, Leighton Meester, has snagged herself a high fashion campaign to match. She’s the new face of Missoni.

This winter, everyone from San Francisco to Maine is feeling the chill. Indeed, here in New York we’ve experienced record lows in temperature, and it’s not even January yet.

But with all the technical advances in fabric and production, you’d expect that we wouldn’t have to rely on those bulky layers to stay toasty any longer. And you’d be right. From whisper-thin thermals that keep you warm to gloves that allow you to use a touch screen, there is a ton of great cold weather gear that also happens to be cute, too. So much, in fact, that we even devoted a holiday gift guide to all things stylish and tech-savvy.

Even if you live in warmer climes–we’re jealous!–there is a ton of techie gear to scoop up. While high-end designers like Norma Kamali and Stella McCartney are getting in the game, showing sportswear-inspired looks on the runway, you can find everything–from vests that conceal your iPod to light-up sneakers–at your local mall. Which means achieving that high-tech, high-fashion look isn’t too difficult after all.

This post is brought to you by Old Navy.

Name: Rachel

Age: 21

Occupation: Student

How would you describe your style? A mishmash of different things that I think have a story and make me happy. I look for things that are unique.

What is on your iPod right now? Well, my iPod was just stolen, but I just added Nicki Minaj and Mumford & Sons to my iTunes.

What is on your holiday wish list? A new iPod and a pair of black boots.

Carine Canned? Racked is reporting that Carine Roitfeld was fired from French Vogue, citing the EIC as the reason for the mag being blacklisted at Balenciaga and Bernard Arnault threatening to pull all LVMH ads from the next issue. “Basically, she was fired,” a source tells Racked. Quel scandale! Not sure if we buy it though. {Racked}

Royal Dress Update: HuffPo’s royal’s correspondent is reporting that while the odds have Bruce Oldfield to design Kate Middleton’s wedding dress, she’ll likely wear a lesser known British designer who has dressed all the Middleton women (sister Pippa and mother Carole included) over the years. {Huffington Post}

When We Have a Lesbian President, ALT Knows How She Should Dress: In her Sunday Times column, Maureen Down mused about whether we are ready for a gay commander in chief following the landmark vote to repeal “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell.” She consulted André Leon Talley who told her that he imagines a lesbian president “who looks like Julie Andrews and dresses to meet heads of state in ‘ankle-length skirts, grazing the Manolo Blahnik kitten heels.’ She would save her ‘butch trouser suit for weekends at Camp David and vacation hikes in Yellowstone. No plaid lumberjack shirts at any time.’” {NYT}

Now, in the January issue of Vogue, Wintour reveals future plans to expand the Fashion Fund to…wait for it…China!

Which explains what Wintour was doing there last month.

While Dakota Fanning may have suddenly appeared on IMG’s model board, another starlet has fallen off.

The “troubled” Taylor Momsen, who signed with IMG in 2008, is no longer with the firm.

This morning, an IMG employee confirmed to Fashionista that they no long represent the actress/singer/pseudo-trouble maker. We’re guessing their last big deal with Momsen was the Material Girl campaign, which was inked long before she flashed her bandaged boobs to an audience at Don Hill’s.

Here’s a heartwarming holiday story for ya: Marc Jacobs and business partner Robert Duffy have pledged to donate at least $48,529 to the restoration of a dilapidated playground in Provincetown, Massachusetts.

The renovation will be funded by the sale of $28 “P-town” t-shirts, available now in Marc Jacobs stores. The eight-shirt series features images of the local community center, boats, smiley faces and mermaids, all drawn by local Provincetown children.
