Quote of the Day: Chloe Sevigny Thinks Peaches Geldof Is “Just Sort Of Around”
By Leah Chernikoff“I’m glad I grew up during the last vestige of cool, in the 1990s, when everything wasn’t blogged and on the Interwebs, when things were more on the downlow and underground. I guess I am stylish, but I would rather have people come up and say ‘I really liked your performance in this or that’ than ‘I really like the way you dress.’ That irks me. Anyway, the term It girl gets used too loosely…Today the term is used to describe, say, Peaches Geldof—a girl who doesn’t do anything but is just sort of around. The original It girl was the 1920s movie star Clara Bow; then, in the 1960s, with Edie Sedgwick and Warhol, It girls turned into socialites, ladies of leisure—people who had ‘it’ just for being ‘fabulous.’ But Edie was just a rich drug addict, and when I got called the It girl everyone thought I was that too. I looked like a junkie because it was the 1990s and grunge was the fashion. But I felt I was doing stuff, not just being a socialite.”
–One of our picks for best dressed of the year, Chloe Sevigny opens up to Playboy about being called an “it girl” by Jay McInerney in a 1994 New Yorker profile–and what the term has come to mean.

I completely agree with her.

Hi Chloe,
I fell in love with you in Last Days of Disco.
ps1 – thank you for calling out trainwreck Peaches.
Wow. Can Chloe get any better?
totally agree
I just want to say this- people like Chloe Sevigny, who’s 40% of popularity comes thanks to the internet, sound really ungrateful and annoying when they bitch the internet/blogs out. If it wasn’t for sites like Fashionista and TFS and a zillion bloggers, she wouldn’t be half as known to a lot of people.
Agree with her about Peaches and the rest of it, though.
Listen grasshopper, perhaps you never heard of a little magazine called Sassy, which Chloe styled for. Or the film Kids and Boys Don’t Cry.
Before the internet/blogs, Chloe had already established herself as a strong actress and the first “it” girl. Everything else is just after the fact.
Now go to your room, you’re grounded!
The “first” It Girl?
And if you would read my comment, you would see that I never said she was simply known because of her fashion sense but you cannot overlook the fact that a lot of people know her because of that. A lot of people also know her because of her line with Opening Ceremony which was hyped on the internet and would not have gained half the momentum it did without it.
Blogs/the internet exposed a lot of people to girls like Chloe who tons of people wouldn’t have known.
That’s all I’m saying. Nowhere did I deny that she is a fantastic actress.
i think chloe sevigny is kind of annoying. like she thinks she’s soo cool but then is all like ‘ugh don’t call me an it girl”
and she’s not even that talented?
“…not even that talented?” This is a bit of a sweeping statement, surely you can’t be serious!
