Rumors swirled last month that Blake Lively was in Paris shooting a handbag campaign for Chanel and now it’s official: the Gossip Girl star is confirmed as the face of Chanel’s new Mademoiselle handbag line, WWD is reporting. Lively was shot by the Kaiser himself for the campaign, which is set to run in April glossies.

Lagerfeld photographed Lively at Chanel’s famous headquarters on the Rue Cambon on that iconic mirrored staircase.

Lively, 23, has made her love for the brand known–she’s walked many a red carpet in Chanel, was a front row presence at Chanel’s AW 2010-2011 couture shows last July, and made an appearance at the opening of Chanel’s SoHo store in September.

Apparently the feeling is mutual. We were clued in to Chanel’s interest in Lively when Anna Wintour, in her editor’s letter in the December issue of American Vogue, made a reference to Karl “scouting” Lively. And now the Kaiser is expressing his unabashed adoration for the starlet.

“She’s a kind of American dream girl…I think she will become a great actress,” Lagerfeld told WWD, also noting that he thought Lively’s name was an apt descriptor for the actress who is “full of life.”

Full of life indeed. Lagerfeld’s enthusiasm for Lively is no match for her excitement for the brand. Just as she teared up over her love for Louboutin, Lively seems sincere in her undying love for Chanel.

On the Mademoiselle handbag she’s to be the face of: “Though I am the face of it, I will carry it like every girl. I will always feel it’s more than just a purse. It’s a quilted case full of lipstick, love letters and the dreams and possibilities that I have always felt every time I see that beautiful ‘CC.’ ”

And on posing for Lagerfeld for the campaign on the staircase at Chanel’s headquarters: “How did Cinderella feel when she slipped on the glass slipper? How did Snow White feel when she met her Prince Charming? A dream come true is an understatement. I can say that I feel like the happiest, luckiest girl around.”

There’s no denying Lively’s love for the brand feels genuine. Let’s just hope she can sell Chanel handbags better than she can move magazines.

Congratulations, Blake! You’re gorgeous and amazing and you absolutely deserve this.

While this must be exciting news for Blake, I can’t help but wonder if she simply confesses her love for the most iconic and/or popular names out there; Chanel, Louboutin, etc. Where’s the love for contemporary American designers? Up-and-comers? Come on, “American dream girl”!

I still don’t understand the fashion world’s obsession with Blake. I would hardly constitute roles in the “Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants” and “Gossip Girl” as an “American Dream Girl.” Her career survives on mediocre roles in action movies and starring in a teen dramedy. There’s no denying she’s gorgeous, but it’s evident by her magazine cover sales that she lacks the star power that fashion leaders seem to think she possesses. Some one like British import Carey Mulligan would’ve made more sense for the brand, but maybe they’re tired of using Brits lol.

For every fashion cover/contract Blake books, Leighton would make a ton more sense, in my opinion. Her looks are stunning but relatable (unlike glamazon Blake, again in my opinion) and her character on Gossip Girl is far more fashionable. Girls I know want to dress like her and be like her. I don’t think many people feel that way about Blake. I can see, though, why Karl would assume her to be more valued in America than she is.

I kind of agree – but people’s hate/dislike of Blake blinds them to the fact that Blake has only 1 endorsement (as far as I know) where as Leighton has about 5 (3 big labels, 2 Japanese co.). Its just that people (fans& haters alike) make a bigger deal of Blake’s – unfortunately this seems to be a double edge sword cos people think that she is over exposed (which I disagree with) thus making Leighton appear more favourable than she might have been.

I don’t think you can make an assumption about an actress by just picking the less thrilling of her works in her oeuvre. If you followed film news carefully, you would know that Blake is more than just a comely girl, she has talent to boot if her consistent and prominent presence in great director’s casting list. Watch The Private Live of Pippa Lee and try to tell me again, if this girl is just another pretty face. What Chanel is doing is pragmatic and forward looking; besides her acting talent – which I’m sure will make her an A-list actress in time to come – she has a genuine charm and ease about her that comes through whatever she does. Blake’s casting for Chanel is a smart and inspired one, no doubt.

thank you, blake lively´s mom/publicist. the private lives of pippa lee was not that good and she was not that good in it.

Oh, come on! You should know by now that actress’s career accomplishments do not matter when it comes to fashion. If you look the part and famous for something (or nothing) we can still make stars out of them in our world. It’s two separate things really.
She’s pretty. Also Karl never really found a good sub for Claudia.

I was more excited about the Greg Lauren news…

lol at Karl scouting Blake. please.

she always comes off vapid.

Personally I don’t find her classy enough to represent Chanel, she is beautiful and all but I just can’t see why they chosed her.

Congratulations to Blake; I just dont understand the irrational hate for this girl but I guess not everyone can like 1 person so Oh well. Plus Im just laughing out loud at all the disgruntled bloggers right now. #WhoMad

I find Blake to be very attractive…but attractive enough to garner all this attention from fashion moguls? Not so much. She’s young and pretty…but not timeless.

I’m thrilled for her! Well, you can see she worked hard getting into the fashion world’s good graces and now she got her break. It goes to show she has initiative. And I’m sure she’s given the time of day because of not only her looks or acting projects, people.

that great i love Blake

It really shouldn’t be a matter of general looks, popularity or talent…There are certain celebrities/models that embody a brand’s identity and message naturally…They don’t have to wear the brand for every press run to make the point that they like it, the brand simply makes sense in relation to them…When you think Chanel, do you really think Blake Lively? I just don’t…This is not an attack on her in anyway, it’s just a matter of compatibility…example of a good match, think Nicolas Ghesquiere’s love for C.Gainsbourg…just makes sense.. [bossabou.blogspot.com]

there’s a difference, you see: Blake Lively is just at-the-moment face of Chanel (current Karl fixation) and Charlotte has been a long time muse for Nicolas so naturally we would always associate Charlotte with Balenciaga, but Blake, not so much for Chanel.

Blake probably kissed ass so much to get this. but I suppose she’s the only prim and proper popular at-the-moment Hollywood gal that Karl can use as an ambassador. Karl and Lindsay were close too at one point but Karl never ever used her as the face of Chanel even though she wanted it so bad.
