GQ Announces the Finalists for Its Annual “Best New Menswear Designer in America” Competition
By Lauren Sherman
May the best menswear designer win.
GQ has unveiled the finalists for its annual Best New Menswear Designer in America competition, and the list is distinguished:
· Warriors of Radness designer Rick Klotz
· Patrik Ervell
· Riviera Club designers Joe Sadler, Derek Buse, and Greg Ullery
· Gant by Michael Bastian
· Miller’s Oath designer Kirk Miller
· T by Alexander Wang
This year, the competition is sponsored by Dockers, which means the finalists will design looks for a khaki capsule collection, available at several Bloomingdale’s locations in the fall. As part of their participation in the project, finalists will also take part in a mentoring program lead by several of the panelists, led by GQ fashion director Jim Moore and editor-in-chief Jim Nelson, as well as Tommy Hilfiger, Steven Kolb, Dockers’ design head Doug Conklyn and Kevin Harter, the vice president of fashion direction at Bloomingdale’s.
But not everyone can be a winner. That distinction will go to just one designer, who will receive a $50,000 cash prize. Last year’s recipient was Billy Reid, who went on to scoop up the CFDA Fashion Fund.

T by Alexander Wang…Seriously? With so many amazing menswear designers emerging such as General Idea by Bumsuk and they nominate Wang’s Hanes meets Joe Boxer irrelevant diffusion line, which is not even worthy of being considered as menswear. Puff! No wonder Dockers is sponsoring this thing.
