In this behind-the-scenes video, we see how Swarovski crystals play a part not only in the costumes designed by Rodarte (note costume designer Amy Westcott is absent in the video) but also the set design, as they lent several sparkling chandeliers to the film. Moreover, we get a sense that while the Mulleavy’s might be designers first, they are truly movie buffs, giving credence to the rumor that the sisters might be interesting in doing more movie projects. “I think Natalie’s performance in the film is a pivotal performance, I feel like it is one of the great performances in film,” says Kate Mulleavy.

Last night I went into the Illamasqua makeup Master Class thinking that a bit of teal eyeliner is very bold and statement-making, and came out thinking that yes, perhaps blue metallic brows could work at the office.
Illamasqua–“makeup for your alter ego”– is a two-year-old UK cosmetics company with roots in the theater and alternative lifestyles. What this translates to in the collection is bold color, makeup that bucks any sort of trend, and an exhortation to express yourself.
The line is launching exclusively at Sephora stores and on its own website this February. The brand held a demonstration last night at the Soho Grand to introduce its potential.
Illamasqua spokesperson/makeup artist Alex Box, a charismatic Brit with scarlet lips, cat eye glasses, and a Cruella de Vil platinum stripe in her hair, led the class last night. She has worked for Karl Lagerfeld, Stella McCartney, McQ, Peter Jensen, and Gareth Pugh. Her work has also been featured in Vogue Italy, France, and Japan, and in other mags like W, i-D, and Another. Her demonstration was absolutely fascinating and she made a compelling argument for self-expression and breaking the conventional beauty mold.

Jil Sander Navy Isn’t Designed By Raf Simons, But it Still Looks Amazing
By Lauren Sherman
If you were as obsessed with Jil Sander‘s Spring 2011 collection as we were, the arrival of diffusion line Jil Sander Navy in stores–and online–is a welcome diversion. The collection isn’t designed by creative director Raf Simons, but it’s obviously inspired by what he does on the runway. (We are assuming it’s Simon’s team overseeing the collection, but haven’t received confirmation from the brand’s reps.) The best news is that the prices, as promised, are a bit more affordable. (Dresses hover in the $600 range.) You can peruse–and buy–the collection on the newly-launched website JilSanderNavy.com. (And if you were also obsessed with the Jil Sander Fall 2010 collection, plenty of those pieces are also available–and marked down significantly–on the e-commerce section of the site.)
Update: We heard from Jil Sander’s people, who say the collection was created by an “internal design team.” Read more »
Vice managing editor Amy Kellner announced via Twitter yesterday that she is the new executive/managing editor of JanePratt.com, a soon-to-be-launched site from the editor of Sassy, Jane, and most recently a yet-to-be-named magazine with Tavi Gevinson.
According to Jezebel, an advert for the job just went up on Media Bistro last Friday, which means the decision to hire Kellner was made incredibly fast, or Pratt already had her in mind before she even put up the post. Which wouldn’t be surprising. Kellner’s been a fixture on the downtown scene since the mid-’90s. So she and Pratt surely know each other. And it doesn’t sound like this site is part of the Tavi project, either.
In fact, given Kellner’s background, we doubt this site will have much to do with fashion. Surely there will be a little, but we’re hoping it’s more of a no-bullshit portal for women. Because other than the Hairpin, which is hilarious and awesome, and Jezebel, which is sometimes brilliant, sometimes not, most women’s sites–much like most women’s magazines–suck. (Why do they suck? Because they’re either too ranty or too sexist. And rarely smart.)
So good luck to Amy and Jane. We’ll be reading from Day 1.

Caption This: Only Miranda Kerr Could Post of Photo of Herself Breastfeeding Her Newborn in Bed and Get Away With It
By Leah Chernikoff
–Miranda Kerr posted this photo of her nursing her newborn son on the site for her organic makeup line, KORA. Unsurprisingly, the site seems to have crashed as a result. Kerr’s husband Orlando Bloom took the intimate photo.
Kerr also revealed the baby’s name, Flynn, on KORA’s site and opened up about her drug-free natural labor which she described as “long” and “arduous” (go figure, the baby weighed in at nearly 10 pounds at birth).

Alexander Wang Launches First Ever Campaign, Er, “Image Piece”
By Leah Chernikoff
For the first time in his successful career, Alexander Wang is launching a campaign, WWD is reporting.
Well, sort of. Wang’s first ever print ads, starring Aymeline Valade in action warrior-type poses and shot by Craig McDean, will run exclusively in Interview‘s March issue. A billboard will be unveiled February 7 at the intersection of Lafayette and Great Jones Sts. A video of the McDean shoot will be released on March 1.
Sure, it looks like a campaign, is timed to come out around the time when most other spring campaigns launch (albeit a bit later), but Wang insists it’s not a campaign, OK?

Is Pepsi Angling to Replace Diet Coke as the Fashion Industry’s Drink of Choice?
Diet Coke has long been the fashion industry’s drink of choice. It’s basically like water for fashion folk.
The industry, has of course, embraced their carbonated beverage of choice in very visible ways–we’re looking at you Kaiser Karl. Karl Lagerfeld famously credited his weight loss in 2001 to a diet of Diet Coke and steamed veggies and was once spotted on a shoot with a butler standing by holding a goblet full of Diet Coke. Most recently, back in April, Lagerfeld designed a special bottle for Coca-Cola Light in France adorned with his iconic silhouette. He also shot their ad campaign, featuring Coca Rocha and Baptiste Giabiconi. Matthew Williamson, Manolo Blahnik, Nathalie Rykiel and Roberto Cavalli have all designed limited edition Coca Cola Light bottles as well.
But now it seems Diet Pepsi is trying to grab their share of the fast-growing fashion market. Today we received a four-pack of Diet Pepsi’s new “skinny” cans which hit shelves in March.
“The new sleek packaging is meant to offer a sassy new way for people to enjoy their beloved Diet Pepsi. The new cans are fashionable and are sure to be the hot new fashion accessory this Spring!” read a release. Get it? Because the cans are skinny, just like what everyone in fashion aspires to be.
Diet Pepsi did have their fashion moment in the sun with those iconic Cindy Crawford commercials back in 1990. Let’s relive it.
