Gaga Returns the Favor: Nicola Formichetti, Lady Gaga’s stylist, has tapped the popstar to create an original soundtrack for his upcoming menswear show at Thierry Mugler, where he is now the creative director. {WWD}

Is it Oldfield? Is Diana-favorite Bruce Oldfield designing Kate Middleton‘s wedding dress? Who knows, but royal snitches do say that she’s made a decision as to whom will be creating the most-anticipated dress of the century. {The Daily Mail}

Based on the ads we’ve seen from American Apparel in the new year, it seemed it was fair to say the struggling hipster retailer was returning to its racy roots–each new ad more shocking and porn-y than the previous one. To wit: pantless models climbing trees, topless models painting their nails or riding a horse (like the one at right), and one model whose pubic hair shows through her white lace panties that got everyone else’s panties in a bunch.

The ads are unquestionably provocative and we questioned whether the near-bankrupt retailer was returning to their ’70s porn-esque advertising roots after a streak of more benign and conservative ads–including illustrated ones and one featuring founder Dov Charney working on his laptop–in an effort to drive up sales.

But a new ad set to run in an upcoming issue of VICE flies in the face of that theory. It features, well, no one. No partially nude barely legal college student, no Dov Charney, no one.

Check it out.

Mark Townsend has styled the locks of Maggie Gyllenhaal, Amy Adams, the Olsens, January Jones, Jessica Biel, and Cate Blanchett, to name just a few. So he knows red carpet hair.

Last night for the Golden Globes he styled Lea Michele (Glee) and Jennifer Lawrence (Winter’s Bone). I spoke to him shortly after his ladies walked the red carpet in an attempt to pry some secrets out of him.

Carey Mulligan has changed red carpet fashion.

I say this on the day after the Golden Globes not because she wowed me last night–she wasn’t even there. It’s because ever since Mulligan wore that Prada dress to last year’s Oscars, the red carpet has gotten a bit more interesting.

Of course there were risk takers before she the pulled it off: Maggie Gyllenhaal, Kirsten Dunst, Michelle Williams, and Sofia Coppola have looked pulled together and cool over the past decade. But here’s why Carey’s different: She’s not cool. She’s pretty and smart and admirable, but she’s not particularly slick or hip. She’s made not wearing a nude, sparkly dress okay for non-hipsters. She’s even made it necessary.

Last night, there were more than ten dresses which I thought, even if they weren’t perfect, were good. And interesting. Usually, I’d say the number is more like three.

Best Dressed: Golden Globes Edition!

Monday, Jan 17, 2011 / 9:59 AM

Pastels and nudes seem to have been the palette of choice at this years’ Golden Globe Awards. Emma Stone looked perfect in her peach-colored Calvin Klein dress and Salvatore Ferragamo shoes, while Helena Bonham Carter looked crazy-good in Vivienne Westwood and different colored heels. A very pregnant Natalie Portman looked very stunning in a pink Victor & Rolf strapless gown and Leighton Meester, like always, looked amazing in a long-sleeve Burberry dress. Claire Danes also chose to wear Calvin Klein and Anne Hathaway looked beautiful in an Armani Prive gown.

For our red carpet coverage, we’re using Cover it Live, a program that allows us to blog away while you give your opinion, too. Below this sentence you should see a box that says “Play.” Click on that to join the conversation.

This week we teamed up with the incredibly addictive style site Polyvore–because you know how much we love a good mood board–and held a contest for users to create a “Fashionista”-worthy set of new looks for the new year. The response was tremendous and we received over 1300 entries.

But there can only be one winner. Lauren, who also served as a style expert on Polyvore this week, fell instantly for cloudberri’s “Hello Sailor” set. Strong title, plus she said she’d wear everything on the page. Easy choice.

Of course, there were many other strong contenders. Check out the runners up and if you didn’t enter this month, get working on your sets for next month–we’re holding another contest!

A reader recently emailed us asking what she should wear to an upcoming interview with a prominent New York fashion designer. “Do you think you could help me with some suggestions?” she said.

Of course we could, but first, we wanted to ask a few of our industry favorites what they think one should wear to a fashion interview. Because it really is different than interviewing for a job at a law firm–or even an advertising agency.

Matthew Hunt, the publicity director at Exposure US (who’s worked everywhere from Gucci to Burberry to Ford Models), says it best:

The first major red carpet event of the season, the Golden Globes, is upon us. We will finally get the answers to pressing questions like, “What will Natalie Portman wear? And will she hide or accentuate her growing baby bump!?” So watch with us this Sunday starting at six as we’re live blogging the event through Cover It Live, just like we did for the Oscars last year.

See you Sunday!

It’s red carpet season and stars are putting on their party dresses. Cecilia Dean looks amazing, as always, in white Givenchy while Rachel McAdams took some flack for her side boob-flaunting Suno but we kinda dug it. Carey Mulligan and Michelle Williams looked prim and party-perfect in ’50s silhouettes by Prada and Wren. And Cameron Diaz just sizzled in fire-engine red.

LOVE’s fifth issue will be the “androgyny issue,” a complete 180 from issue four’s breast-centric celebration of femininity.

LOVE held a launch party last night in London to celebrate the issue, where transsexual model Lea T. celebrated her cover with LOVE founder and EIC Katie Grand. There are three covers of the upcoming issue, according to the Telegraph, with Justin Beiber, Kate Moss, and Lea T. appearing solo on each cover.
