Rachel McAdams walked the red carpet for the London premiere of “Morning Glory” yesterday. While the movie was meh, her sartorial choices for this event were anything but.

She’s taking a bit of a beating in the press today, which is typical for any actress who chooses a dress that is the slightest bit fashion-y and not made by Marchesa. However, while I always applaud risk taking and originality, did Rachel get in over her too-teased head this time?

The Dress: It’s a Suno S/S 2011 dress originally shown with a shirt underneath–a much more casual look. Rachel chose (or was convinced by her stylist) to wear it without the shirt. The proportion of the thin strips of fabric in the front compared to the fuller skirt just seems off and is reminding me a bit of the Borat mankini. But she looks completely comfortable and I’m certain that there was no danger of a wardrobe malfunction.

The Shoes: Purple satin Charlotte Olympia. Too heavy for the dress or a good contrast?

Textbook for Fashionista: Daphne Guinness!

Wednesday, Jan 12, 2011 / 2:00 PM

Fans of the Tumblr blog Textbook, take note: Fashionista has teamed up with the blog’s mastermind, John Jannuzzi, to create storyboards for our industry’s style stars (last week he took on Elle‘s Kate Lanphear).

Many people look at fashion as a form of self-expression. And who could blame them? Your wardrobe is just another extension of your personality, which is one of the greatest things about clothing. Considering that, is there anybody in the world with more personality than Daphne Guinness? Read more »

Ann Taylor continues their revamp efforts (ok, sometimes we’ve called it their J.Crew-ification) with today’s announcement that Katie Holmes will be the new face of the workwear brand, WWD is reporting. The campaign will break in March magazines.

Holmes is a good fit to replace Heidi Klum: she’s a 32-year-old working mom whose style has settled into a place that’s clean and elegant but not too edgy or over-the-top and therefore accessible. Oh and also she’s gorgeous.

To that end she told WWD, “I’m glad that there is a store like Ann Taylor that can offer amazing styles for the many different roles that women play.”

But Holmes is not the only big celebrity campaign reveal today. Star-of-the-moment Natalie Portman‘s campaign for Miss Dior Cherie has also been revealed–and she’s wearing nothing but a Blair Waldorf-esque headband with a bow.

Star-spawn Rumer Willis also makes her modeling debut today as the face of Badgley Mischka.

Check it out.

I might be missing the latest snowstorm (haha!), but I live in New York. And despite the lovely weather here in Florence, my lips and skin still feel like they’ve been exposed to the elements.

Yet despite the gaggle of moisturizers out there, I still have no idea how to keep my skin soft and smooth during the winter without greasy lotions. And it seems that many of you feel the same way. So I asked professional snowboarders/Roxy spokeswomen Torah Bright and Erin Comstock to explain how they take care of their skin. I mean, if they can manage to keep their skin protected, it should be easy for the rest of us, right? Here’s what Torah and Erin had to say:

Remember when it seemed like American Apparel was toning down their notoriously porn-y ads?

There was that ad that featured Dov Charney working on his laptop in bed flanked by his creative directors. Then there were those illustrated ads, that showed frontal nudity and pubes galore, but the girls were, you know, CARTOONS. We figured that was as far as American Apparel would go when it came to showing pubic hair. We were wrong!

FLORENCE–No, Emma Watson didn’t walk down the runway during new partner Alberta Ferretti‘s show last night. Instead, the Pitti guest of honor invited starlets like Camilla Belle, Georgie Henley and seasoned actresses including Marisa Berenson to model her beyond-red-carpet-worthy wear, with Italian singer Elisa performing an acoustic set. And the blogger? It turned out to be Italy’s Chiara Ferragni, also known as The Blonde Salad. Read more »

Sally Hansen, the drugstore nail polish brand, is seriously upping its style cred this spring with two new products.

First off, Prabal Gurung designed six Sally Hansen nail colors to complement the designs from his S/S 2011 show. Do you remember the turquoise and orange that came down the runway in his first few looks? Those colors are represented in three of the six colors: an orangey red, sky turquoise, and strawberry mango (called respectively Runway Red-y, Model Behavior, and Casting Call). The other three are neutrals–a metallic, a shimmer, and a pearl. On the runway, stylists used the nude shimmer, Without a Stitch, on models’ nails then painted a thin line of Casting Call across the tips. The limited edition colors will be available this spring and will retail for $6.99 a bottle.

If regular old nail polish is too boring for you, Sally Hansen is also launching Salon Effects nail polish strips this March. They’re obviously supposed to be an at-home competitor to Minx, the $50 salon procedure beloved by Katy Perry and Lady Gaga.

The strips come in 24 different patterns, ranging from plain neon colors to glitter metallics, to leopard and lace. They’ll be available this March and will retail for $9.99 each.

I tried them out and gave them to a few women from different demographics to try, too. Here’s the report:

Topshop’s Sir Philip Green. Theory honcho Andrew Rosen. Designer Kenneth Cole. HSN CEO Mindy Grossman. Put them in a room with 300 other top retail CEOs and execs and what do you get? The Financo Forum, held last night at the Harmonie Club.

The event, organized annually by Financo (the top fashion/retail investment bank), is a hot ticket for industry insiders. The lively panel discussion and networking session gives attendees the rare chance to collectively review the state of the retail industry, to share insights and to socialize with their elite peers.

The forum’s focus this year was on all things digital. Although e-commerce and social media hardly seem to be new topics, they’re something many retailers are still trying to learn more about. Financo Chairman Gilbert Harrison explained that the goal was to “help navigate the new world, and to ultimately drive sales and profits.” The panel included Ben Fischman, CEO of Rue La La, Chip Wilson, Founder/Chief Innovation and Branding Officer of Lululemon Athletica, Stephen Zangre of Facebook and Dan Schock of Google, and was moderated by CNBC anchor Nicole Lapin.

A few key takeaways:
