Turns out Lindsay Lohan can move product–just not her own.

When Lohan showed up to court (again) this past Wednesday, this time to plead not guilty to grand theft charges that she stole a $2,500 necklace, she did so in a Kimberly Ovitz skin-tight white mini dress. We never thought we’d be comparing Lindsay Lohan to Michelle Obama, but just as Mrs. O has proven she can move merch (at J.Crew or White House Black Market or H&M), the Kimberly Ovitz “Glavis Albino” dress Lohan wore, which retails for $575, is selling like hot cakes (and is sold out most places).

According to ABC News, the dress has sold out everywhere online, and the NY Post is reporting that Bloomingdale’s and Neiman Marcus have sold out as well. And despite a release we just got from Starworks’ VIP placement trumpeting Amy Adams wearing Kimberly Ovitz, an Ovitz rep told the Post that “Kimberly had no role in Lindsay Lohan wearing the dress.” Starworks told us Amy Adams was their first placement for Ovitz.

Despite the insta-success Lohan has brought Ovitz, she doesn’t seem to have had the same effect with her own line of leggings and apparel. WWD is reporting that Lohan’s 6126 line, once carried by Nordstrom, Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s, Neiman Marcus and Henri Bendel, “has quietly receded from the shelves of department and specialty stores.”

Maybe she should wear more 6126 to court. Making courtroom fashion statements has become old hat for Lohan–she famously etched a “fuck you” on one of her tie dye manicured nails, and at a single court appearance this past July, the NY Daily News noted that she changed outfits three times during breaks and recesses (just like an awards show!).

If you take a look at the timeframe, the “sold out” white dress things seems to be more good PR spin rather than fact. The dress is supposedly pre-fall, and I don’t know of any designer whose pre-fall collections are already in stores, let alone in a significant enough quantity to sell out. If you look at the Post article, it seems to confirm this and allude to the dress selling out with buyers rather than actual shoppers.

“Brick-and-mortar retailers like Bloomingdale’s and Neiman Marcus, as well as online sellers Intermix and Shopbop, had sold out of the dresses long before Lohan’s sexy stroll.”

I’m surprised that LiLo’s appearance in the dress made sales rise. I would have thought her fans would be shop lifting it.

The drama surrounding Lindsay Lohan is free publicity for the names involved. The store whose necklace got stolen is probably receiving many more customers; similar to the Kimberley Orvitz dress selling out. I believe it is more because Lohan made an attempt at looking more court appropriate that it is making more people take a second look and like what she is wearing. The demand for that dress is overwhelming and the shortage that comes from that might even only help in its popularity.
