Northern Exposure: Nine Obsession-Worthy Canadian Labels
By Anna Vander Broek
I grew up in a cottage on Lake Michigan, just hours from the Canadian border. As a Midwestern girl, I appreciate unassuming, practical clothes. My boots should keep my toes warm and I want to wear the same shirt twice a week, without anyone noticing. This is why I’m a little obsessed with clothing designed by our neighbors to the North. The Canadian brands I love are simple and sophisticated. The outerwear blocks the weather and the under layers are beautiful and basic. Perfect for the cottage or the city: I swear.

just one correction – joe fresh is actually sold at the superstore, which is a chain of grocery stores owned by loblaws. part of the philosophy of the line was providing convenient fashion to people, making it possible to buy it while you pick up all the other essentials! it is not sold at walmart.
yep, that’s what we meant by “the walmarts of canada” (because most people haven’t heard of the superstore), but we’re changing it now!
Ha ha, aw, poor Superstore/Loblaw’s. Superstore is far from our worst big-box/grocery chain, so it’s not quite so grim, though they are ubiquitous and bland. They’re mainly just a grocery store, and Joe Fresh is really the only non/grocery item sold there, whereas Wal-Mart is really a department store that’s recently decided to add a grocery store for cornsyrup based food products.
I hope that a New York store will bring some designer collaborations
This is such a great list! Lots of the more well-known brands, alongside companies I’ve never heard of, and pride of place for Joe Fresh, which is the saviour of cash-poor, fashionable Canadians. I really appreciate that it’s a good smattering of brands from Montreal and Vancouver, since Canadian fashion certainly does not revolve around Toronto Fashion Week.
Great list but missing many major Canadian hitters. Smythe, Greta Constantine, Jenny Bird, etc.
Smythe is most surprising. The Smythes, both Christie and Tommy, are some of my style icons.
OH CANADA! Thanks for this!
