Charles Anastase controls the weather. At least, that’s how some bemused show goers felt when they ducked out of a downpour and into his venue, only to be greeted by a soundtrack of falling rain.

Drizzle sounds gave way to Brigitte Fontaine’s “Il Pleut” and a collection that was anything but dreary.

This season, Anastase’s schoolgirl grew up—just enough. His princess-line coats and signature loose, button-backed dresses were present and desirable as ever. Jeweled barrettes enhanced the “to the headmaster’s office with you, young lady” vibe, while metal tag-embellished wool dresses—teenage armor—had the clack of rebellion.

LONDON–Step up, step up for the Louise Gray experience. The pink-haired designer opened the door to a funhouse of clashing plaids, metallic polka dots, houndstooth checks, bondage balloon hats and club-kid makeup at her Fall 2011 show.

Gray crammed dozens of plaids into the show, often all in the same garment. Some looked less like the sober heritage tartans we’ve come to know than patterns lifted from those rolling plastic grocery bags that old ladies wheel to the market. Others served as backdrops for still giddier detailing, as with the foil polka dots that floated over plaid mohair coats.

LONDON–The signature draping was there, but designers Maki Aminaka Löfvander and Marcus Wilmont set aside the serenity of previous collections for a harder-edged Fall 2011.

This time, their hunter-gatherer of a girl wore spliced-together draped animal print dresses, washed leather jackets and hoof-like wedge booties.

LONDON–It’s only the second day of London Fashion Week, but the party circuit is in full swing. First up was Club Monaco’s event with Browns at the Royal College of Art. The Ralph Lauren-owned label is selling its wares in the UK for the first time through the legendary retailer, and they brought campaign star Lou Doillon and a slew of industry types out to celebrate. Along with a repeat appearance of that black and white photo booth–Club Monaco had one at last month’s Spring 2011 launch party in New York–the event’s big moment was when Clare Maguire took the stage. The singer/songwriter, who has been compared to Annie Lennox and Stevie Nix, is about to release a new single….

LONDON–Okay, I’ll admit it. When I received the invite to the House of Holland show and after party, I thought the bingo ink marker included was something else. What, I wasn’t so sure…. (And no, I didn’t look at the back of the invite, where there was a bingo board printed, until long after I realized what the tube actually was.)

Now the bingo theme makes a lot more sense, given Henry‘s granny chic showing. There were lots of New Look-inspired wool tweed suits, delivered in pretty colors like magenta and tangerine. There were also tons of faux pearls, which were dotted on sweaters, fastened to denim dresses, and made into giant hoop earrings.

LONDON–The Big Smoke is such an exciting place for fashion right now, and Jonathan Anderson is one of the reasons.

The young designer showed his women’s collection today at Somerset House, the unofficial headquarters of London Fashion Week. It was the first time he has showed women’s separately from men’s.

And it was the right choice, as it gave Anderson more room to do less-androgynous pieces. Last season his girl was a grunge magpie, wearing Liberty prints and patchwork sweaters. This season, she’s a tough ’90s schoolgirl in mohair sweaters and work boots adorned with tufts of pink, blue or white fur.

LONDON–London fashion is rarely slick. Christopher Bailey does slick at Burberry, but his mentor is Donna Karan, not another British designer. So even though Jaeger is an old fashioned house much like its checked counterpart, it’s not surprising that creative director Stuart Stockdale’s collection today was minimalist, rich-looking, but also a bit rumpled. And that’s not a bad thing.

LONDON–Fashion Week crowds across the globe are awaking from a bleary eyed winter slumber to the spectacle of the Fall 2011 collections. So what better timing than the night before London’s catwalks ignite, for biannual magazine AnOther to celebrate its first decade of razor’s edge fashion editorial. Editor-in-Chief Jefferson Hack placed illustrated birthday cards from designer pals–including Karl Lagerfield, Alber Elbaz of Lanvin, the Missoni family, Philip Treacy and Gareth Pugh–into the hands of local patissiers to create 10 birthday cakes on display through the weekend at Selfridges.

“I wanted to inspire our readers with the insane possibilities of what can be achieved at the highest level in bringing fashion and food together,” says Hack.
