Bensoni’s Sonia Yoon is adorable!

Everyone loves to bemoan the state of fashion today: it’s too fast, it’s too big, it’s too corporate, it’s too global, it’s too accessible, they say. But no one really does anything about it. Technology speeds things up and fashion follows. Everyone wants more and they want it now. Which is not necessarily a bad thing. But last night one of fashion’s most respected brands brought together some of fashion’s most respected names to slow things down, talk, and reflect about the state of fashion.

Lauren and I felt very lucky to attend Miu Miu’s second “Miu Miu Musing” hosted by the incredibly gorgeous and stylish Shala Monroque, who looked like a Miu Miu barbie doll in a bright red wig. The theme for the evening’s salon discussion was “constructive superficiality.”

The first day of fashion week is only halfway over but we can already tell that this fall, it will be all about the layers. With cold air circulating through the tents, Chai‘s collection of pleated skirts over tailored pants and oversize wool blazers atop wool wrap coats couldn’t have looked more irresistible from our perch.

In a sea of muted earthy hues like charcoal, moss, smokey lavender, and nutmeg, we were pleasantly surprised by a mop of bright pink hair, a few metallic embroidered tops, and a maxi dress with floral printed draping.

It’s a big week for Gaga’s Little Monsters. The first single from her upcoming album, “Born This Way,” drops tomorrow, and Vogue has posted the complete article and images from Gaga’s highly anticipated March cover issue (written by Jonathan Van Meter and shot by Mario Testino) on their website.

As we expected, there are dramatic shots of Gaga in over-the-top McQueen, but there are also some relatively normal photos of Gaga in Louis Vuitton and Haider Ackermann sans her usual elaborate makeup (of course, she’s still sporting a pastel pink bob and purple lips) that make the seemingly confident star look vulnerable. In the article, she tells Van Meter “I am quite down-to-earth for such an eccentric person…”

The issue hits newsstands February 22.

The tents were abuzz on this crisp first morning of New York Fashion Week. Guests filing into the BCBG show looked fresh faced and energized, flitting around the rows to greet friends and old co-workers during the show’s 30 minute delay.

The paps swarmed the front row of B-list celebs that included a very bronzed Jennifer Love Hewitt, Kelly Rowland in cute coral cocktail dress, and Katrina Bowden of 30 Rock.

On the runway, a parade of models in sleek ponytails donned delicate silk crepe dresses that were belted and layered over white turtleneck body suits for an overall ’70s vibe. Overall, the collection was clean and simple with a neutral palette and structured silhouettes, but sheer fabric, splashes of color, and varying neck lines kept the collection interesting.

Perhaps it was telling that we were blasting The Cranberries’ “Zombie” on our way to Nicholas K’s 9 a.m. show this morning. True to their trademark downtown-meets-military aesthetic, brother/sister duo Nicole and Christopher Kunz sent out a collection that My So-Called Life’s Angela Chase would flip for. A mix of goat hair-trimmed leather toppers, cocoon-like parkas (a Nicholas K signature piece), and plenty of velvet separates in autumnal evergreens and burgundies–the looks seemed straight out the 90s grunge-glam movement. And since those endless layers of leather and wool can swallow a person whole, the designers cinched the silhouettes with plaid button-ups tied offhandedly around the models’ waists. We especially love the skirts (cut in both flannel and leather) that riffed off the same vibe with their built-in “belts” fashioned from actual sleeves. Each look was shown with either combat boots or creepers (the indisputable shoe of the moment). Unfortunately, comfy and cool as they might be, stacked-sole flats aren’t always the best for strutting—one model took not one, but two tumbles in her chunky lace-ups.

Walking in the big shows of a season can jump start any model’s career. (See: Arizona Muse) So, naturally hundreds of girls and guys piled into Hudson’s Library in Midtown yesterday to try their hand (or face) at impressing Andrew Weir, legendary casting director and founder of ACW casting agency. Everyone from up and coming new girls to industry powerhouse Crystal Renn stopped by to “take a walk” and pose for Weir’s cameras.

The whole process took over eight hours, but operations inside Hudson’s Library functioned like a well-oiled machine, each model working their way through a series of obstacles before greeting the Mr. Weir and strutting his or her stuff. It was a rare opportunity to see the girls and guys we worship in magazines in their “natural habitat.”

Alexa Chung looks ravishing in red Erdem on the cover of Net-a-Porter‘s new print magazine. According to a post on the Fashion Spot, the glossy will be available to purchase on Net-a-Porter.com beginning next week.

Net-a-Porter was pretty much the first site to successfully incorporate editorial into their e-commerce platform. (Although they’ve scaled back on the amount of editorial over the years.) What do you think of this reverse strategy?

Which privileged designer has asked her West Coast exec daddy to call in favors and pay people off this fashion week? Apparently she’s even stolen a rival designer’s fit models.

The Heart Truth’s Red Dress show is not really a fashion show. It’s more of a spectacle of sequins, satin, and celebrities. And that is exactly what’s so fabulous about it.

The Heart Truth is a campaign sponsored by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, with the “Red Dress” as the symbol at the center of the campaign reminding women to protect their heart health. So to that end, they send a bunch of celebs (and “celebs”) down the runway to an unabashedly girly, happy soundtrack. Unlike regular runway shows where you are supposed to look very serious while contemplating the clothes, here you’re encouraged to hoot, holler, clap, and sing. I love this show.

First stop was backstage pre-show, which was a complete clusterfu*k. I was hoping to get close to Dita Von Teese (one of my girl crushes) to grill her about her amazing skin and that red lipstick, but she was nowhere in sight. Denise Richards, Gayle King, Audrina Partridge, and Giuliana Rancic were all roaming around. Big waves and big eyelashes seemed to be the unifying beauty theme.

When you’re running around to different shows during Fashion Week, it’s easy to forget about non-essential things like, well, food and drink. Luckily Fiji Water, a Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week sponsor, will be at the tents handing out water to everyone. There’s enough drama there already without someone passing out due to dehydration.

In addition to supporting our hydration, Fiji is also supporting the dreams of some college students who aspire to careers in fashion. Four young women–Meg, Jackie, Brittany, and Alice–were chosen to work the tents as Fiji interns, and Fiji asked for Fashionista’s help dressing them for their Fashion Week debut.

When we last saw Jodie and Danielle Snyder, the sisters behind jewelry line Dannijo, we were interviewing them for our “How I’m Making It” series. Well it certainly seems like the girls have “made it.”

On Tuesday night the Snyder sisters made their New York Fashion Week debut, presenting their fall 2011 collection, “Aboriginal,” at a packed gallery space on West 22nd St. Perfectly-styled models in tousled finger-waves done by Sally Hershberger (and one older gentleman smoking a cigar) posed in meticulously constructed vignettes that recalled the wild west–old wood cabins and pelts on the walls. Tinsley Mortimer (yes, really) was also inexplicably floating around.
