After you see the killer shoes on the fall runways, check out more hot designs on fnshoestar.com sponsored by Brown Shoe. Six contestants are battling it out in the nation’s first footwear reality competition. And Fashion Week favorite Rebecca Taylor has signed on to judge the first challenge. There are plenty of surprises in store, so tune in each week. Throughout the season, the contest will feature more celebrity judges and cutthroat competition. And don’t miss weekly fan contests and special prizes.

Schedules are finalized, batteries are charged, shoes are chosen. And having a few key beauty items to face the week of chaos is just as important as having my Macbook charger in tow. Faced with crappy weather, a frenzied schedule of shows, and the pressure of day-to-night dressing, you have to be prepared for all eventualities. And really, isn’t this true of anyone’s life?

There are tons of new and classic products that are perfect:

Hair: Sleek or tousled? If the latter, you must try Bumble and Bumble’s new Texture Hair (Un)Dressing Creme. Run it through damp hair and dry with a diffuser for volume and a perfect messy look. I’ve used it on my hair dry, too. It adds a little weight and texture when things are getting flyaway. Prefer sleek? Aveda’s classic Brilliant Emollient Finishing Gloss with rice bran oil provides a ton of shine and the smell is really calming. And I’m giving Leah a can of Meta Revive Dry Shampoo from celeb hairdresser Serge Normant’s posh new line. Because who has time to wash their hair during Fashion Week?

Andrea Jung, Avon’s chairman and CEO, had to go on the defensive after the company reported a 15% decrease in profits for the fourth quarter. Blaming “execution” problems and governmental/economic issues in Brazil and Russia, she attempted to explain Avon’s plummeting profits to Wall Street analysts.

According to WWD, analysts were pretty blunt in their questioning. Andrea had to address questions like, “[S]houldn’t there be a bunch of people who lose their jobs over such awful execution?” Her answers were a little cagey, but it sounds like some organizational changes may be on the way. “I’ve got to make sure we’ve got the right organizational structure, which may be different than it has been,” was one of her responses.

Avon is going to upgrade aging technology in Brazil and spend less on advertising in Russia to offset tax rules there that were affecting salespeople in that country.

But honestly, doesn’t Avon have bigger problems?

It was just over a month ago we told you Tumblr–the image-heavy platform that high profile luxury labels, fashion writers, fashion photogs, and fashion enthusiasts alike have become taken with–was sending over 20 of its users to New York Fashion Week.

Now we’ve got the list of bloggers and more deets about what they’ll be doing this coming week. It’s no surprise that Jessica Quirk (nee Schroeder) of What I Wore and Textbook‘s John Jannuzzi are two of the chosen 24. But maybe it’s a bit more surprising that Tumblr is flying in Party Tights‘ Ella Wood, a 16-year-old who Tumbls from Devon, England.

And if you were doubtful that Tumblr’s 24-strong fleet would have access to shows, they’re all set to attend Oscar de la Renta’s show on February 16, as well as get some one on one face time with Mr. de la Renta himself this Friday before his show. Erika Bearman, the brand’s director of communications (better known as @oscarprgirl), will also treat the Tumblr 24 to a tour of Oscar de la Renta’s studio.

Check out the full list of the lucky 24.

It’s safe to say the debate over whether Michelle Obama should or should not have worn a foreign designer to the China state dinner has been blown out of proportion. It started when Oscar de la Renta, followed quickly by the CFDA (via a statement by president Diane von Furstenberg) and then WWD condemned the First Lady for wearing McQueen instead of an American designer to the state dinner, which they interpreted as her lack of support for the US fashion industry (which relies heavily on China). Leading fashion writers Cathy Horyn, Robin Givhan and Kate Betts all chimed in with their opinions.

And even though Michelle Obama wore that controversial McQueen three weeks ago (on January 19) folks are still talking about it. Just yesterday, in response to the First Lady saying, “Women, wear what you love. That’s all you can say. That’s my motto. It’s nice to have on a nice suit. But it’s nicer to change a generation, in terms of their health. It’s a better use of my time to focus on rallying this country around our military families. I mean, there’s so much that I hope to do in this role, that makes a difference in people’s lives,” Nanette Lepore, one of New York Garment Center’s most ardent advocates wrote this in the Huffington Post:

Five years of raising awareness for New York’s Garment Center have been rendered irrelevant by one statement. What Michelle Obama chooses to wear can save and create American jobs. Her influence on the American fashion industry does not detract from her agenda in the East Wing. The First Lady can support her causes and simultaneously support a valuable American industry and the thousands of people it employs. I wish she would rethink her statement.

Yesterday, at a White House luncheon, Michelle Obama told reporters, “Clothes are just the thing that you wear to do the stuff you need to do.” According to Politico, one reporter then asked about her decision to wear a British label to the China state dinner. Here’s what she had to say:

Guillaume Henry, the handsome designer behind the revival of French couture house Carven, just ended a whirlwind trunk show tour of the US, visiting Barneys New York locations in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, and yesterday afternoon, the store’s Madison Ave flagship. This was the first time he’s been able to meet his American customers, a rabid fan base that has grown rapidly since the label relaunched at a contemporary price point in Spring 2010. (A quick fashion history lesson: Carven began as a Paris couture house in 1945, known in the 1950s for dressing royals.)

“What’s interesting is that they all wear Carven so differently in each city,” he told Fashionista yesterday. “They all want different things.”

And thus far, Henry’s been able to deliver, with a mix of refined wardrobe basics inspired by 1950s couture, the era in which Carven was initially so popular. “Many of the shapes we use–the cocoon shape, the ballerina–are from that time. But we’ve updated them to look modern,” he says. “Mrs. Carven wanted to be cool, and she was, but what was cool then is different from what is cool now. We want our clothes to be right for now.” So while he’s taken a peek into the archives to understand who the Carven lady was, those looks don’t entirely define who she currently is.

As for how the house is able to bring couture-like garments down to a contemporary price point?

This week, fashion designer Behnaz Sarafpour celebrates 10 years of her namesake collection. We recently sat down with the designer to reflect on the last decade–from the paint splatter dresses that put her on the map to her work with the Alexander Calder Institute–and speculate on what’s to come. (We’ve also put together a time line of her biggest moments.)

Pre-Fashion Week Mad Libs with Billy Reid!

Tuesday, Feb 8, 2011 / 9:40 PM

CFDA Fashion Fund winner Billy Reid is real cute. Read this to see why.

Ever since news broke that Anne Hathaway would host the Oscar’s our thoughts turned immediately to her dress changes and what Rachel Zoe, who has been her stylist since she did The Devil Wears Prada, would choose for the actress.

Even though Zoe is nearly eight months pregnant and wasn’t able to travel to Paris to attend the couture shows we’re sure she’ll pull this off with plenty of (possibly altered) couture. But her super star styling skills come at a cost.

It’s no surprise that Zoe commands a hefty fee, but Merle Ginsberg at The Hollywood Reporter has it on good authority from a source inside the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences that what Zoe is charging Hathaway is “astronomical.” She continues, “[Zoe's fee] hovers near the expenditures of what designer and longtime Nicole Kidman stylist L’Wren Scott spent on the show in 2000 as Oscar fashion coordinator. Scott had orchestra trumpeters wearing custom Donna Karan!”

Tea isn’t a new note in perfume, but it definitely seems to be picking up steam as a fragrance trend. (Bad tea pun. Sorry.) As tea shops become more and more ubiquitous and tea is increasingly touted for its healthy effects, it makes sense that it’s popping up in non-potable form.

Jean-Claude Ellena is generally credited for starting the tea-as-fragrance craze. He created a scent made of jasmine and violet leaf tea and used it to perfume Bulgari jewelry stores. This morphed into several successful tea scents for Bulgari.

Tea is a subtle fragrance that blends well with more traditional notes to produce fragrances that smell really light and modern.

Click through to see what’s brewing. (I really can’t help myself. Sorry.)
