Rumor: Blake Lively To Play Carrie Bradshaw in the Sex and the City Prequel
By Leah Chernikoff
There may some life in the Sex and the City franchise yet…sans Sarah Jessica Parker.
Rumor has it that the powers that be in Hollywood are in talks to produce Candace Bushnell’s The Carrie Diaries, which chronicles Carrie Bradshaw’s pre-”City” life. The new, young, Carrie? Grazia is reporting that Blake Lively is set to star in the prequel.
It’s just a rumor, but Blake Lively as the new Carrie Bradshaw makes perfect sense. Her Gossip Girl character is more than a little Carrie-ish and off-screen she embodies the character as well: she professes a genuine love for Louboutins and Chanel, wears attention grabbing cleavage-bearing skin tight mini dresses without coming off as trashy, and her blond mane has been dubbed the new “Rachel” by the paper of record.
I’d wager most SATC fans who were disappointed by the offensively bad sequel are still fans of Carrie and would be happy to check out Blake Lively try to fill SJP’s Manolos, or replace them for a red sole.

Blake’s reps say she’s not doing it. If a prequel is done I think it will just turn into another teen dramedy cos the fun elements of SATC such as the sexploitation and all of Samanthas language etc, will obviously have to be toned down or cut out due to it’s young target audience so it just won’t be as much fun. Blake would have been a good and obvious choice but I doubt she would want to do another teen drama again.
The Carrie Diaries doesn’t have Samantha, Charlotte or Miranda. It’s about Carrie’s life before she met them… but yes, it would have to be toned down.
Although Blake is lovely, personally (and maybe this is just because I think Serena on GG is a total dumbass so I’m less inclined to like Blake), I would think they should go in another direction if they actually do make the film…
I’m not supporting this farce. Major difference between SJP and Blake – men don’t find SJP attractive, it’s a girl crush thing, Blake is the complete opposite. Blake’s a blonde bombshell with less than stellar acting range (even in the Town she played a variation of Serena and let’s not talk about the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants). Blake is all hyped up, I’d much rather see Carrie played by someone different, I’m liking Emma Roberts. Carrie wrote for Vogue, Blake is like a Vogue doll being dressed up, they’re not the same. Carrie Bradshaw is too iconic a character to be mucked up by Blake Lively – Sorry

I just don’t see that the fans who hated SATC2 would embrace Blake Lively. They miss the sharp social commentary of the earlier years of the show, and want the fashion to be second place to that. I doubt any of those fans are fans of Gossip Girl or Blake.
I’m sorry, you think Emma Roberts is a good actress? Maybe you’ve watched something of hers I haven’t but everything that I have is less than mediocre. Especially “Wild Child”. Just because Blake is the typical blonde bombshell and Emma is more toned down, doesn’t make her a good actress.
And I thought was she rather cute in Sisterhood.
Would she just go away already? Blake Lively wishes she was SJP, there’s a difference b/t style and “here, put this on, so you can sell Chanel better.” I can’t stand Gossip Girls and if that joke is in it, I will not go see it.
Maybe you should know that it’s Gossip Girl, not plural before you rant on her ;)
Ohhhhh, Blake LIvely. I love you, but please don’t ruin your career by doing this. First of all, don’t stoop so low as to play Horse Face in SATC. I mean … ew. You’re too pretty for that. Second of all, make a name for yourself. Don’t remake anything.

Prettier face, but she WISHES she had SJP’s career.
This would be a tragedy…I’m a huge SATC fan and despite the flop of the 2nd film, Black as Carrie would have to be even worse. Carrie is smart, city savvy, and attractive because of her wit, charm and personality. As was stated above, Blake is the opposite without any of SJP’s loveable quirks. From what I’ve seen, Blake has no comic abilities and basically just doesn’t have the acting chops to carry, Carrie.

Oh god please no.
How can she play an aspiring writer when she can’t even speak right? God that girl can’t act for the life of her.
And she always looks too trashy for my liking while Carrie, sometimes barring some cleavage, never comes off like that.
God NO NO NO
I actually think she could pull this off. If you watch interviews of Blake, she’s so lovely. Charming and warm and bubbly. Plus, if anyone here has READ the Carrie Diaries, Carrie at that point is evidently nothing like the Carrie we know from SATC. It’s a variation and one that Blake could pull off well.
As we are in the minority who don’t irrationally dislike Blake or find her annoying or find every little reason to hate on her, I would have to agree with you. Blake is very witty in her interviews so I think she would’ve made a good Carrie. If she was to play Carrie, I think she would be better as 20′s Carrie from Summer and The City rather than teen Carrie cos Blake is getting too old and too far ahead in her career to keep playing teen roles. I think they’ll find someone younger from the Disney channel or an unknown to play Carrie in a watered down version.
I agree! :)
I don’t “irrationally dislike” her, and she may very well be lovely and witty as a person who knows, I certainly don’t so I won’t speculate. However, her acting skills don’t seem to be all that great so far – that’s all.
Also, Carrie is tiny. Teensy. Blake is super tall. I realize this is a minor detail, but it just seems so wrong. I never read the books, I think Blake is watchable and generally likable, but I just don’t see it. What about somebody like Dakota Fanning? She’s small and scrappy but smart.
Dakota Fanning is actually a pretty great idea. She’s fantastic.
she’s too pretty…Carrie has more edge and spunk. shes too nice for the part.
how’s about Dianna Agron from Glee?
She would make a great young Samantha I think, too bad there won’t be a young Samantha.
No wayyy. She’s too…fresh faced and sweet to be Samantha. Samantha needs to be played by someone with a little more sass.
Who would play Miranda? Someone like Olivia Thirlby.
She’s supposed to be a “good actress”? She’s got that super annoying way of talking that makes you want to pull your hair out. Maybe that’s just Quinn, Idk. But she’s hardly a Carrie.
I think if she were a stronger actress (she kinda blows, hard) and a more compelling personality then she would be on the cover of Vogue all the time instead of Blake Lively. She is gorgeousssssssss.
Agreed. She’s really pretty.

I really don’t think this role would be too taxing for any actress. SJP is competent, no more than that. It sounds like the film would be fashion, glamour and product oriented. Neither SATC movies really had much of the feel of the series. The “franchise” became all about dressing up and the $20 catalogue promoting all the merchandise in the film and the horrible licensed products really said it all.
