Sophie Theallet's Nine West Collection is Inspired by the French Riviera--And New York, Of Course

Sophie Theallet is always wearing red lipstick. Except for, that is, the day the Nine West team visited her Brooklyn flat to begin work on her capsule collection for the brand. (It's set to hit select stores this May.) "For my first meeting with Nine West I wasn't ready for them...they all came into my apartment and I said, 'Oh, you're here! But I don't have my red lipstick on!'" Luckily, it worked out. Because Theallet was most certainly wearing red lipstick--a lovely Bordeaux color, if you must know--at last night's event celebrating her collection with the shoe super label. It's the first collaboration Nine West has done with a ready-to-wear designer in years. (Vivienne Westwood, Thakoon and Sophia Kokosalaki teamed up with the brand in 2006.) The French designer, who lives in Brooklyn and works at a brand new studio in Manhattan, was not only excited to team up with Nine West, but the brand's creative director Fred Allard. (Who also happens to be French.)

Luckily, it worked out. Because Theallet was most certainly wearing red lipstick--a lovely Bordeaux color, if you must know--at last night's event celebrating her collection with the shoe super label. It's the first collaboration Nine West has done with a ready-to-wear designer in years. (Vivienne Westwood, Thakoon and Sophia Kokosalaki teamed up with the brand in 2006.) "It's very exciting!" she told Fashionista last night at Banchet Flowers in the meatpacking district, where her shoes and bags were displayed next to hundreds of pink and purple blooms. "We work together very, very well."

The collection is a mix of espadrilles, flats, strappy heels, and raffia bags, several of which are themed around Theallet's signature bold stripes. "It's very 'what's going on' in fashion now, isn't it?" she says, referring to the sudden punch of bright stripes popping up on every other runway. Will they always be a part of her collections? "If you're French, stripes are very familiar. But I chose to make it in grosgrain--the chicest way!"

There's some chic jewelry, too--a truly whimsical charm necklace and bracelet, featuring Sophie's initials, the Eiffel tower, and some other adorable Parisian trinkets.

If our Twitter followers are any indication, Theallet x Nine West is sure to sweep the nation, especially at these gentle prices. (Flats are $79, heels are $109, satchels are $68-98, and jewelry starts at $36.) As soon as I sent out an image of the flats, the crowd went wild. Félicitations, Sophie!
