The Heart Truth's Red Dress Collection: Suzanne Somers, Dita Von Teese, Eve, And...Chris Benz?

The Heart Truth’s Red Dress show is not really a fashion show. It’s more of a spectacle of sequins, satin, and celebrities. And that is exactly what’s so fabulous about it. The Heart Truth is a campaign sponsored by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, with the “Red Dress” as the symbol at the center of the campaign reminding women to protect their heart health. So to that end, they send a bunch of celebs (and “celebs”) down the runway to an unabashedly girly, happy soundtrack. Unlike regular runway shows where you are supposed to look very serious while contemplating the clothes, here you’re encouraged to hoot, holler, clap, and sing. I love this show. First stop was backstage pre-show, which was a complete clusterfu*k. I was hoping to get close to Dita Von Teese (one of my girl crushes) to grill her about her amazing skin and that red lipstick, but she was nowhere in sight. Denise Richards, Gayle King, Audrina Partridge, and Giuliana Rancic were all roaming around. Big waves and big eyelashes seemed to be the unifying beauty theme.

But the real hair story backstage was Chris Benz, who designed a dress--the best of the whole lot, and definitely the most unique--for Eva Amurri to wear in the show. His Rainbow Brite coif (at right) has set the hair bar unbelievably high for the rest of the week.

I was escorted out of the backstage area just as I heard someone say, “Um, I really think she’s bleeding.” Well. You can insert the joke here.

The celeb quotient in the audience was fairly stellar. Yes, there were Mr. and Ms. Jay from ANTM *yawn*, but further scanning revealed Matthew McConaughey in the front row supporting wife Camila Alves, and Susan Sarandon looking like she just came in from raking leaves--trying to be incognito, perhaps? Johnny Weir was prancing about in a big black fur coat. Early prediction is that he will be everywhere this week. Yay!

A few highlights from the show:

-Suzanne Somers (in Ina Soltani) came down the runway with stick straight hair, a short full skirt, and legs that looked ten miles long.

-Eve (in David Meister) looked downright pissed off.

-Dita Von Teese (in Zac Posen), who was born to wear red, oozed down the runway and managed to let her dress strap slip off at the end. She kept it PG-rated.

-Alison Sweeney (in Tadashi Shoji) walked to Olivia Newton-John’s “Let’s Get Physical.”

-A very pregnant Laila Ali (in A Pea in the Pod) still looked like she could kick everyone’s ass, yet was also very glowy and pretty.

-Linda Gray (in Pamella Roland), of "Dallas" infamy, was there. Linda Gray!

-Patti LaBelle (in Zang Toi) flapped her enormous sleeves and lip-synched to her own song while walking.

-Natasha Bedingfield (in Nicole Miller) grabbed a mike and sang after her turn down the runway.

The whole thing just put me in a great mood. Bring on Fashion Week. Oh, and eat a heart healthy diet.
