15 Dream Prom Dresses

Monday, Mar 21, 2011 / 6:18 PM

When I went to the prom over a decade ago, Marc by Marc Jacobs didn’t exist. Our options were thus: Caché, Jessica McClintock, BCBG and if your mom could afford it, Betsey Johnson. Of course many of us opted for vintage. I, for one, wore a gunmetal gown with a little black cardigan on top, inspired by a Calvin Klein ensemble Gwyneth Paltrow chose for a red carpet appearance in the late 1990s.

But then there’s Steff, who wore Marc Jacobs collection to her prom. (Yeah, that’s right. She wore the dress again last year to the Whitney Art Party. It’s amazing.) Leah spent a pretty penny, but wasn’t as happy with the results. “I bought (what I then considered) a very expensive beaded BCBG gown. I also thought it was the prettiest dress ever,” she says. “Then coming back from a boozy pre-graduation beach week in Delaware (which is some DC schools’ ritual) my friends and I stopped at a Loehmann’s and I bought a slutty, pink postage stamp of a dress for $50 and wore that instead.” Don’t worry though, she wore the pretty BCBG dress to a wedding, and had a fever on prom and went home early so the slutty tube dress didn’t get much play.

But even if we loved our dresses, there are so many amazing options out there now–from Target to Forever 21 to H&M–that we’re pretty sure we could have found something even better if we were graduating in 2011.

Are you going to prom this year? What will you wear? If prom was long ago, what would you choose if you could do it all over again?

Prom anecdote: A girl in my grad class paid Holt Renfrew to replicate J.Lo’s infamous plunging Versace dress, in Aqua with rhinestones.

that’s ahhmazing

I’m sorry but I have no idea who would EVER wear those dresses to Prom. I think I saw two that were cute, but really…a double-breasted jacket or shift dress?

I sort of agree with Noelle here ….

I wore matthew williamson and was convinced I was marissa cooper. Then i threw up all over it. which really made me feel like marissa cooper.

I can’t imagine a better comment to this post. Which dress did you wear?

you win

How could you forget Marchesca? I guess I’m more of a princessy-dress type of girl :)
Also, could you imagine someone showing up to prom in Chanel? lolz. Although, Rachel Zoe probably did go to prom…

aw, thanks about the MJ dress! it’s my most prized possession (& the most money i’ve ever spent on anything… investment piece!)

How could you forget Saab?, his dresses are really dream prom dresses. Most of the dresses here really lack the glamor impact. Also Armani’s new spring line is nothing short of stunning. I wish you included some dresses from there.

the Chloe and MJ dresses are TDF. I think ‘the’ Lanvin dress from this season would also be amazing.

These are weird choices for Prom dresses, although the featured gown certainly does look like a dream. Out of the bunch I would choose the Rodarte but the reality was a black silk off the shoulder top with a black and green abstract floral print long skirt made using a Vogue dressmaking pattern!

I wish I had enough class (and money) when I was 18 to pick a Jil Sanders ballgown skirt + white tee. That is definitely my dream prom outfit if couples with a Lanvin pearl and ribbon necklace.
