A well-dressed and starry crowd gathered at a small and elegant venue in NYC last night to celebrate Blake Lively’s new role as Chanel ambassador. The random guests we saw milling around included Justin Long (who we overheard telling someone that he’s thinking of moving to Austin), Dr. Pat Wexler, and Curtis Stone. A card for “Mr. Zac Efron” sat on the table unclaimed.
But of course the biggest agenda of the evening was to talk to Blake about the recent rumors we heard about her not attending the upcoming Fall 2011 Chanel show because it’s “tacky” to do so as a celeb.
A miffed member of Blake’s team confirmed that indeed Blake wouldn’t be attending the Chanel show this coming Tuesday. But she also wanted to assure me that it is “killing” Blake that she can’t attend. I was then hustled up to talk to Blake about it firsthand.
Blake pronounced us “mean” for publishing the initial story, but smiled and was really quite sweet and disarming about it all. Here’s what she had to say about the show, about doing campaigns for other brands, and about whether Karl Lagerfeld ever wears sneakers:
So you’re not going to the Chanel show..why?
Because we’re shooting Gossip Girl, our season finale. It’s our final five days. Every single one of the characters is in every scene. There’s no room for them to change the schedule. That’s why I’m going out [to Paris] this weekend for the dinner. I’m thrilled. And hopefully Karl will give me a sneak peek of the show beforehand. I lovvveee seeing the pieces in person.
What was it like the first time you met Karl? Were you nervous?
Of course! I was wildly intimidated. He’s an incredibly intimidating person because he’s so accomplished and he’s such a genius. But the moment you meet him, he doesn’t try to intimidate you. He’s so kind and humble and alive and passionate. I love and respect him so much. I wouldn’t want to work with anyone else. The moment I met him I said, “I don’t want to do a campaign unless it’s Chanel.” So it’s nice that we get to work together.
He has a certain persona that he presents to the media. Have you ever seen him in sneakers or laughing or doing something silly?
Well, of course I’ve seen him laughing! You don’t see him in sneakers because he doesn’t like sneakers. What he loves is fashion. What he loves is design. What he loves is elegance and couture. It doesn’t excite him to put on a pair of sneakers. It excites him to put on these amazing boots that he has. He’s a really funny, passionate person. He’s full of life and energy.
You’re famously known for not having a stylist. Is that true?
So what is the most important thing Karl’s taught you about getting dressed or about fashion and style?
We don’t really sit around and talk about what to do. He makes incredible designs. What I get from him is an amazing closet of clothes to choose from.
She went on to talk about how inspiring Chanel’s designs are and about how as a girl she remembers seeing the CC’s and never dreaming she would ever own anything so gorgeous.
So after this conversation and her obvious dedication to Karl and the brand, I’m quite sure that if she didn’t have work obligations, she’d be in the front row waving that interlocking C flag, tacky or no.
