Travels With Geren

Geren Lockhart’s Jamaican Adventure

Designer Geren Lockhart, of Geren Ford fame, has been traveling up a storm, and she’s decided to tell Fashionista readers all. This installment of “Travels with Geren” takes us to Jamaica.

When/Where: Negril, Jamaica December 17-25, 2010

Why: Jamaica has been on the list for a long time. One of my best friends and I have made a habit of being somewhere wonderfully warm for at least a week at the end of each year for the past few years.

Best Meal: The “patties” from The Health Shop and the lobster salad from Idle Awhile were both consumed almost daily!

Most Interesting Discovery:
The up-river hike at Mayfield Falls. It was a perilous drive up to the base of the waterfalls, and it was a hike that almost took me down (or did but only momentarily). But it was also one of the most unexpected and wonderful discoveries to literally “hike”–aka swim–up the falls in the water rather than walking along the side of the river. With the trees forming a canopy allowing the sun to dapple through, it was very much like a movie scene shot by a very good directory of photography. The eclipse was also out of a movie–I’ll probably never see anything like it again in my lifetime. It was inspiring.

What did you buy?
A wonderful set of wood and brass inlay dominoes crafted on the island, a handmade crocheted bathing suit which is super 70s chic, and a hand knit hat for little lucky Max. It’s camo melange and Rasta colors, I would have gotten one myself if they came in adult sizes!
