Central Saint Martins‘ masters program is arguably the most prestigious fashion course in the world. So Kanye West, rapper and fashion obsessive, has reportedly pulled a James Franco and applied. The UK’s Sun says that West flew into London last week to meet with the head of the program, Louise Wilson.
The professor is known for being extremely tough–and schooling the best of the best, from Alexander McQueen to Gareth Pugh–so it’ll be interesting to see if she and the board give West the green light. Sure, she’d garner publicity from his attendance, but does CSM really need more publicity? It’ll be interesting to see how it turns out.

this is odd but if there was a celebrity who would do it it would be kanye.
my concern is, just like everyone else, is kanye’s commitment. if he was serious and put 100% of his focus on this it would mean he’d have to put his career on hold. if he decided to keep making music while in school i think it would really exhaust his creativity.
visit my blog jerrlife.blogspot.com everyone!
Love this look!
Kanye never excites me. I may be the only one in fashion ignoring him. If ANYONE enrolls in such a fashion design program it means 200% focus to curriculum, usually involves not having a significant other too unless one is married. There isn’t anytime to party much less be casual if you want to attend class all day go home do homework and get some reasonable sleep.
I certainly think he’s committed, if nothing else. I would dare say (and I do, following Kanye as I do) that his love of fashion SERIOUSLY rivals his love of music.
I thought the vuitton shoes of his were gorgeous. Marc said his commitment on that project was astounding, as well.

a love of fashion and commitment to a project does not a fashion designer make.
He works my last nerve. It’s so annoying to see yet anther celebrity trying SO HARD to be in the “cool group”. Like get real Kanye. I bet you when he wasn’t a celeb he wouldn’t even DARE pick up a fashion glossy like Elle or Vogue. This is stupid and I find it insulting. And the fact that the fashion world is so open to this shit is really bothersome. Enough is enough already!
These celebrities are annoying! Stick to your singing, rapping crap. Stop trying to fit in where you don’t.
Ummm…..I don’t even if it’s worth me trying to “defend” Kanye, not that I really care one way or the other, but I hate when people speak out of ignorance.
Kanye has a love for fashion, that as I stated in a previous comment, is rivaled ONLY by his love for music. He actually attended the Art Institute in Chicago studying FASHION DESIGN prior to moving to NY to make beats and sell them while trying to break into the industry. The only reason he left school was because there was actually a fairly big opportunity for him to capitalize on his music skills (which, obviously paid off) in NYC.
Furthermore, if you actually took the time to sit and listen to his music EVEN ONCE before prematurely and harshly judging it, you would find that, particularly his first album, while it might not be your particular cup of tea, is EXPERTLY produced, lyrically brilliant, sonically brilliant, and proliferated with lyrics pertaining to fashion. He has a love of fashion that is very much real, and goes beyond the typical, casual, “Oh, I want to make a clothing line…”, and he’s obviously respected enough in the fashion industry and his love of fashion is recognized enough that LOUIS VUITTON allowed a collaboration with him…that, just for the record, turned out to be WILDLY successful.
This comment is not only snotty, it’s incredibly short sighted. Creative people are typically interested in expressing themselves in many ways. You might be a one-dimensionally person, but most of us (artists or no) are not. If you have the resources to try your hand an various things in life YOU SHOULD DO THAT. We all should.
The fact that you listed “Elle or Vogue” as if they are the go all publications for men and women wanting to work in fashion made you sound incredibly small minded. No he probably didn’t pick up either of those, thank God. I understand the annoyance with celebrities dabbling in other industries, but I’d curse the day when any artist isn’t encouraged to express interest in other mediums. Especially in an industry where some still feel “Elle and Vogue” are core arbiters of taste and style.

seriously, you’re comment is actually what’s insulting.
who are you to judge someone’s love for fashion? i didn’t know having two passions was a crime.
and, honestly, what you said could easily be applied to bloggers. no one in the fashion industry is busting their balls (though they should)
so, just back off (bitch)(hahahaha)
Celebs with multiple careers is a perk they pay for with their very public lives. Good luck in fashion school Kanye!

Unlike most celebrities who just lend their names to a clothing label or just to increase revenue by starting up a clothing line, Kanye is actually trying to go back to school. And to boot, he’s APPLIED to attend the school. Which I’m HOPING means he isn’t just throwing money or fame around in order to get in. Though the school accepting might do so just because he is Kanye. But he is already respected in the fashion industry so it might not be a tough decision for the school.
people need to stop hating on Kanye , he is a creative genius and has a genuine love of fashion that he has every right to explore. Who else is applying to Central Saint Martins? Oh right probably no one but we have time to criticize someone’s desire to express creativity. Thank you everyone for responding to some of the ignorant comments on this post.
