Snowflakes and slushy streets didn’t put a damper on festivities as Rebecca Taylor welcomed party goers to her newest boutique on Wednesday night. While the plummeting temperatures called for snow boots and parkas, Taylor fans opted to don their favorite spring looks at the designer’s Meatpacking District outpost. Selita Ebanks chose a polka dot skirt paired with a floral tank, 30 Rock‘s Katrina Bowden wore a floral jumper, and we even spotted a certain Gossip Girl in a floppy sunhat. (Tika Sumpter, to be exact.)
The space reflects Taylor’s flirty ensembles. From the ornate ceiling moldings to the cast-resin furniture complete with a touch of burnished gold, it’s easy to see that the designer played a big role bringing the store to fruition. “I’ve been 100% hands on with this project,” said Taylor as she took a break from greeting guests. “I’ve been here all day working on everything including the flower arrangements! I’m a little bit of a freak like that,” she admitted. Of course, she did have the help of APALondon, a design firm that has also worked with the likes of Stella McCartney and Adidas to create unique store layouts.
Celeb fans were excited to browse the space after posing for a line of photographers. While Michelle Trachtenberg admired a pin-tucked, cadet blue peasant blouse, Selita Ebanks was eying her favorite trend of the season: the mid-calf skirt. As revelers browsed the racks, they were treated to champagne, gimlets, mini cupcakes, and most importantly, 25% off everything inside the 1,800 square foot space. There was also an opportunity to shop for a cause. By making a five dollar donation to the Red Cross Japan Earthquake and Pacific Tsunami Relief, guests got a chance to win a one-of-a-kind Rebecca Taylor dress which was featured in her short film “Beautiful Dreamer.” I’m keeping my fingers crossed!
The new digs are twice the size of Taylor’s first NYC shop, which she opened in NoLita seven years ago. “It was such a different scene,” Taylor remembered. “Very cute stuff but we had very little merchandise. I was literally hand painting t-shirts and putting them on the racks to fill it up. I was freaking out!”
Getting new merch won’t be a problem this time around as the brand marks its 15th anniversary. To celebrate, Taylor has launched exclusive collaborations with labels like Citizens of Humanity, Wendy Mink, and Porselli.
So, what was the New Zealand native like 15 years ago? “When you’re 26 you’re not that forward thinking,” Taylor admitted. “We started out with a few pieces in the dress department. I would never do it again ever in a million years but there is something really nice about Rebecca Taylor being out there.”
As far as future plans, we can expect a children’s line with a few key pieces and possible stores in Dallas and Los Angeles. And while Taylor loves the energy of the Meatpacking District, she hasn’t forgotten the uptown girl. The designer is also exploring spaces on the Upper East Side.
