Orange You Glad Estee Lauder’s New Spring Collection Is Here?
By Cheryl Wischhover
The Spring 2011 runways were awash with orange, both on the clothes and on the faces. But none of the looks got more attention than makeup artist Tom Pecheux’s pop of orange and white on the girls’ eyes at Derek Lam.
That 15 minute moment on the runway is now the cornerstone of Estée Lauder’s spring makeup line. After Tom, who is the Creative Makeup Director for Estée Lauder, used a coral lip pencil as an eyeliner, the brand quickly made plans to whip up eye shadows in the same colors.
I got to sit with Tom and a group of beauty editors to hear about Estée Lauder’s new spring products and colors. Ogling candy-colored nail lacquers and listening to Tom drop the F-bomb frequently in his charming French accent made for quite an amusing afternoon. (He also made all of us average-looking people feel better by saying that a lot of models aren’t necessarily that attractive–they’re just photogenic. His opinionated banter made this presentation much more personal than some other dry corporate launches I’ve sat through. But I digress.)
So let’s talk orange first. A limited edition line called Orange Crush will be exclusively available online at Estée Lauder’s site and at Bergdorf Goodman in NYC starting in April. The line consists of two PureColor shadows–Orange Crush and Sugar Cube–in case you’re interested in copying the Derek Lam Spring 2011 look. Or if you aren’t necessarily an orange eye kind of girl, the Pure Color Gloss in Orange Crush is a shiny zinger of a lip color. The Estée PR girls were wearing it and it looked stunning. It’s going to be a sell-out.
There’s been a bit of a lipstick shake-up at Estée Lauder, too. New Pure Color lipsticks are available in 39 colors, in Long Lasting and Crystal formulas. (The Coral Sun color made its NYFW debut on my mouth this season, and it got a backstage compliment from a makeup artist at one of the shows I covered.) Tom Pecheux also has a six-shade signature line, made up of colors he loves. The Plum Couture is a standout and he used Vanilla Truffle on the girls in the Derek Lam show.
Finally, the candy-colored nail lacquers are to die for. There are 16 new shades, eight of which will be exclusive to Nordstrom–all are available in March. Loved the Fuchsia Flame and Wild Blue–so tropical.
So even if you can’t quite break away from your black and neutral wardrobe, toss a little color on you face, won’t you?
