PARIS–There’s always a bit of a crowd surrounding a fashion show–usually it’s comprised of street style photographers and the people who want to be snapped by them (editors and buyers rush in just before the show starts). But the scene outside Gymnase Japy last night for Nicola Formichetti‘s first womenswear collection for Mugler was more akin to the scene outside a Lady Gaga concert. Her little monsters were there in throngs, hanging outside the venue for a glimpse at their icon, who would walk twice for her friend and collaborator.

Felipe Oliveira Baptista was made head designer at Lacoste, for his ergonomic tailoring and easy-to-wear elegance.
His own line, that he showed yesterday at Paris’ Palais de Tokyo, felt like a dark, high-end take on his sporty designs. A press release on each seat informed us that the theme of the collection was a “post-apocalyptic atmosphere short-circuited by vivid images of exotic amphibians.” Indeed, a military efficiency punctuated with touches of rain forest fluroescents soon filled up the runway.

Deborah Lippmann, the famous manicurist whose Lippmann Collection nail polishes are beloved by celebrities everywhere, spoke about spring beauty trends at a Nordstrom event last night.
First, Deborah confirmed what we already noticed after NYFW: the almond-shaped nail is trendy right now. Also, look for opaque nudes and beiges this spring. (She happens to have a fabulous one in her collection, called “Naked.”) And come fall, gray will be all over the place. Not greige. Gray.
Deborah does Lady Gaga’s nails/talons, which must be quite a project, and she had some stories to tell. For the infamous egg stunt at this year’s Grammys, Deborah talked Gaga out of “big, long, jeweled ghetto nails” in favor of simple…yellow ones. The last thing Gaga did before getting shut in her pod was stick her hands through a hole in the top and yell, “I love my yellow nails!” This prompted Deborah to get on the phone with the factory to speed up production of the color. “Yellow Brick Road” will now be available in April.

If last season Dries Van Noten showed restraint with his signature prints, this season he went back to his roots, using them with abandon.
There were swirled zebra stripes, geometric diamonds, zig-zagged lines, Pucci-esque circles, brocades, jacquards, florals, and the list goes on. Prints came first in black and white and then in bright bold orangey reds and cobalt blues. Textures were mixed and matched too–fur lapels were attached to thick printed wool trenches, and sequined fringe shimmered in sqaures on dresses. If the collage of of prints, colors and textures seems dizzying-ly overwhelming, it didn’t look that way on the runway. While last season’s collection may have been more obviously restrained, there was restraint here, too–simple silhouettes like slouchy knee-length silk dresses, below-the-knee skirts paired with fur-collared jackets, and belted stiff wrapped jackets countered the excess of print, color and texture. A slowed-down moody version of David Bowie’s “Heroes,” played as if to say, Van Noten’s girls for fall had a bit of Ziggy Stardust in them, only a more restrained incarnation.

A well-dressed and starry crowd gathered at a small and elegant venue in NYC last night to celebrate Blake Lively’s new role as Chanel ambassador. The random guests we saw milling around included Justin Long (who we overheard telling someone that he’s thinking of moving to Austin), Dr. Pat Wexler, and Curtis Stone. A card for “Mr. Zac Efron” sat on the table unclaimed.
But of course the biggest agenda of the evening was to talk to Blake about the recent rumors we heard about her not attending the upcoming Fall 2011 Chanel show because it’s “tacky” to do so as a celeb.
A miffed member of Blake’s team confirmed that indeed Blake wouldn’t be attending the Chanel show this coming Tuesday. But she also wanted to assure me that it is “killing” Blake that she can’t attend. I was then hustled up to talk to Blake about it firsthand.
Blake pronounced us “mean” for publishing the initial story, but smiled and was really quite sweet and disarming about it all. Here’s what she had to say about the show, about doing campaigns for other brands, and about whether Karl Lagerfeld ever wears sneakers:
So you’re not going to the Chanel show..why?
Because we’re shooting Gossip Girl, our season finale. It’s our final five days. Every single one of the characters is in every scene. There’s no room for them to change the schedule. That’s why I’m going out [to Paris] this weekend for the dinner. I’m thrilled. And hopefully Karl will give me a sneak peek of the show beforehand. I lovvveee seeing the pieces in person.
Clearly the only thing anyone in Paris is talking about this week is John Galliano, and who will replace him at Dior.
The latest gossip goes something like this: Riccardo Tisci will indeed replace Galliano at Christian Dior, Haider Ackermann will slip into Tisci’s spot at Givenchy, and despite YSL’s vehement denial otherwise, Hedi Slimane is about to take over for Stefano Pilati. Oh, and yes, Carine Roitfeld is coming along for the ride. What’s more, if Ackermann is out of the running at Chanel, does that mean its Alber Elbaz’s when Karl purportedly retires in 2012?

Before They Were Street Style Stars
It’s hard to believe there was ever a time that Anna Dello Russo didn’t walk around with cherries on top of her head, or that Taylor Tomasi-Hill wasn’t impeccably layered behind cat-eye shades.
In the past few years, street style blogs like the Sartorialist, Jak & Jil, and Street Peeper have propelled a group of flawlessly and outrageously dressed editors and it-girls to rock star status, their outfits documented by throngs of style paparazzi each time they leave the office.
We unearthed snapshots of seven prominent street style icons when they were just names on a masthead. We (and our self-esteem) were surprised and relieved to find that the style of these ladies was once not so different from the rest of ours. Street Style Stars: They Used to Be Just Like Us!

Carven Fall 2011: Cool Girls at the Café
PARIS–”We wanted to invite people to an anonymous place like a French café– a bit messy but we like it messy because that’s real life–girls are not always super perfect” said Carven designer Guillaume Henry after his first “showtation” for the revived Paris couture house. Yes, you heard that right. That’s Henry’s fashion neologism for the way he showed Carven’s fall collection at the Palais de Tokyo this morning–half show half presentation. Showgoers sat as if at a Paris café, gathered around tiny round tables as models walked (very carefully) up and down stairs through doorways from behind a scrim, so that you could see the silhouettes of the clothes as they walked behind each doorway. It was very clever.
