SAN DIEGO–Neiman Marcus fashion director Ken Downing recently stopped by the department store’s Fashion Valley location in San Diego to give a small crowd of loyal customers a tutorial on spring trends. (Hint: coral is the color of the season.)

But between summery looks from Dries Van Noten, Chanel, Gucci and more, he chatted with us about Tom Ford’s “spectacular” womenswear collection, sticking with Dior and why he may chase you down and steal your shoes.

Lady Gaga is trading in her mic for the pen.

The provocative pop star has landed a gig as a columnist with high fashion mag V. Her musings will appear monthly, with the first one scheduled for the May 12th release of issue V71, the Summer 2012 issue. No word yet on what she’ll write about (blood? semen?) but she is asking her Little Monsters for help. According to Stylecaster, Gaga is looking to her fans to illustrate her “styled as an editrix” for the image that will accompany her column. You didn’t that Gaga would submit one of those black & white, head-tilted semi-smiling on vacation-type contributor photos did you?

So you want to give it a try? Here’s what you need to know:

It’s Britney y’all–and she’s back to promote her new album Femme Fatale…in Dolce & Gabbana (no cut offs or umbrellas here).

It’s no secret the Italian design duo love pop stars–they’ve dressed Kylie Minogue for her last three tours. And they’ve got a soft spot for Britney too, telling the Telegraph:

“We love Britney and we love to dance to her new songs! We can’t wait to hear the whole album!…She has always been among our favourite artists because she has been able to remain true to herself and to her style throughout the years. With her music she influenced and inspired generations of people for more than 10 years, always staying at the top, and we can’t but congratulate her for this new, important achievement.”

Here’s hoping Britney’s album sounds as good as she looks in her Dolce & Gabbana. Click through to see all of Britney’s Dolce & Gabbana’s looks.

Whether it is accidental or deliberate, fashion imitates art. We stumbled across a South African blog, Miss Moss, that proves our theory.

The blogger juxtaposes street style snapshots and runway looks with paintings, costumes from period films, vintage design, and even pottery in an inventive series called “Color Comparisons” in which she creates side by side comparisons of Mary Katrantzou‘s creations with decorative oriental prints on ceramics.

Here are our top ten favorite pairings by Miss Moss.

Biz Markie (of “You Say He’s Just a Friend” fame, which is also a very good karaoke song and has an amazing video that you should watch as soon as you’re done reading this) will DJ Dockers Fall 2011 preview party, Elle.com is reporting. Sadly the event is closed to the public.

Musical performances often accompany fashion events but they’re usually beautiful young super hip acts like The Like or Florence and the Machine or Oh Land–not a rapper infamous for a 1989 hit in which he sings off key. But that’s what makes this whole thing kind of genius. Screw the musical ingenues, just call me Blah Blah Blah.

So how exactly did this magical fashion pairing happen? According to a Dockers rep:

The Sartorialist‘s Scott Schuman posted two photos of Milanese fashion blogger Angelica Ardasheva on his site yesterday (thanks to Jezebel for identifying her and her blog). Schuman doesn’t usually post commentary with his images–they speak for themselves. But on this entry he offered these thoughts:

I saw this young lady in Milan several times this past season. She is one of the crop of new bloggers. I loved that she’s a bigger, curvier girl than most of the other bloggers who you see in the press and tend to represent the genre.

The subtle thing she achieves so successfully in these two looks is to complement the sturdy but beautiful shape of her legs with an equally strong shoe. A daintier shoe would be overpowered but these shoes create a beautiful harmony for the lower half of her body.

Commenters seized on Schuman’s descriptors, and 1148 of them have weighed in, most of them expressing outrage or disappointment, like this one:

TORONTO–Leave it to top Canadian retailer Holt Renfrew to bring out the big guns for their invitation-only opening show at Toronto Fashion Week. Set to the tune “Taking Care of Business,” viral video star Justin Wu rounded up the nation’s top designers and insiders for yet another lip-syncing montage, this time with a hometown twist.

Walking down the runway were pieces from the retailer’s top talents, including New York favorite Jeremy Laing, London-based designer Todd Lynn and outerwear label Smythe. With 11 designers in tow, the runway highlighted Canada’s crème de la crème handpicked by John Gerhardt, Holt’s creative director: “The uniqueness in Canadian fashion is that it is not always identifiable due to the diversity within our industry and in its design. This uniqueness also reflects our Canadian culture.”
