Adventures in Copyright: Zara’s Sweet on Prada’s Entire Spring Collection
By Sarah Ferguson
It seems like Prada’s spring 2011 collection is everywhere. It’s on the cover of every fashion glossy, it dominates editorials, and a look from the collection even made an appearance on a cartoon lady in an Airfrance ad. And now the collection is hitting the high street. A tipster sent in this photo of the window display at a Zara in London which is essentially a scene from Prada’s runway, right down to the striped sombrero (thought in white instead of neon). A fashion sleuth investigated further and it seems there are many, many pieces in store right now that look very, very “inspired” by Prada’s spring collection.
“The entire store is totally Prada-ed out,” our sleuth reports. “The color scheme includes royal blue, and vivid shades of orange, green, and pink. Crop tops and skirts are striped, as are the scarves a la the Prada mink stoles. Prints are tropical and silhouettes are boxy and loose.”
Check out another photo of Zara’s take on Prada. It’s not the first time Zara’s been heavily inspired by the runways, but did they take things too far this time?

I don’t think the striped pieces are a big deal because every single store is doing them this season but the display is going too far.
Stripes are everywhere and the two dresses are only vaguely similar, as are 1000 other dresses. The sombrero is surely borrowed from the runway (or inspired by) but hey, no one has a lock on sombreros and who is going to actually wear one, anyway, unless you are fresh from a stop on I-95 South.
It has all been done before and Prada is certainly not alone in using stripes and bright colors this season.
I hope you’re kidding. Prada did not invent nor holds the claim for sole usage of bright colors, graphic colorblocking, stripes or chiquita banana lady type botanical prints.
If it were up you guys, us plebeians couldn’t wear anything that was “inspired” by ready to wear. Oh well, I guess that puts us in our place.
Seriously, Prada doesn’t own stripes.
it is crazy how much zara put all their chips on the prada trend of bright color stripes. its a fair accusation. prada is big for summer. no prada doesn’t own stripes but the timing is not coincidence. zara stores are prada’s little sister right now with all the similarities and references seen in their design.
only thing missing are the banana and monkey prints. im waiting zara.
to be “fair” zara’s doing the white trend too. celine and anything structured are on their radar as well. i saw poor leather copies of the padded burberry jackets and balmain pinned out jackets as well.

Their lookbook has pieces that are pretty much Jil Sander.
Although yeah, stripes isn’t copyrighted, I’ve noticed from way back that Zara designers get their ideas manly from others. Nothing new here. I mean there was a series of high top sneakers they had that was 90% equal to Supra sneakers. The tees, same (from Parra to Sixpack) they go down all the way with same colorways and shapes. But hey, styles are free to copy so.. Still, the way of just imitating other designers is lame. Cheers
A Zara men’s coat I saw everywhere this fall was straight out of Burberry Prorsum
both = ugly
The Prada collection is so ugly, I couldn’t care less who copies it.
I don’t generally go for Prada – head to toe is too much for my liking. I did like quite a few garments from this collection though – the use of color was great.
Stripes and prints! I think those Prada designers spent a lot of time studying some Matisse prints and collages..

enjoy!
H&M is slowly adding in Prada-esque stripes this season as well. They even have banana prints, but on swimwear.
Why is this news? It’s exactly what Zara shoppers have come to expect for years. Now write about something that matters.
Is Zara copying the look of Prada’s runway show? Yeah, but it isn’t a “Adventure in Copyrights”. Copyright laws don’t apply to garments and you certainly can’t copyright a color palette. Nor can you copyright an “idea”. All of which I am sure you know, so why do insist on making these nonsensical posts claiming copyrights are being infringed?
They just said they were clearly inspired by Prada, which they plainly were. No mention of an immoral, let alone illegal infringement of copyright. Adventures In Copyright is just the longstanding title of posts dealing with “inspiration”, rarely is it suggested that a serious wrongdoing has occurred.
Yeah, that is the problem. The suggestion of illegal activity is in the title. The fact that the title is “longstanding” makes it worse. I’ve yet to see any of the posts so titled actually deal with an copyright issue. Which makes the use of the term nothing more than cheap sensationalism.
Well that’s what they do… I feel like they copied one my design I posted on my blog in November… You can heck it here if you want:

and tell me what you think?
Thanks ;)
Stripes are in fact everywhere, but whenever you go to a Zara store you can see how they style the outfits and you can certainly spot the similarities between both brands. However, I couldn’t live without Zara anymore!
If anything Prada is ‘copying’ a Caribbean designer who did those ‘sombreros’ many seasons ago in the traditional black, green, gold as part of her Jamaican collection. So yea…this is where big money and marketing talks.
