Eight Seasons of Project Runway Contestants Design Fake Wedding Dresses For Kate Middleton

How crazy would it be if Kate Middleton announced, “Mondo Guerra (season 8) will be designing my wedding gown.” Yeah, that’s not happening, but Project Runway, which has been on hiatus and is currently seeking contestants for Season 9, enlisted 52 alumni of the show to sketch wedding gowns for her. This is all to help promote Lifetime’s upcoming movie, William and Kate, which will air on April 18. It is sure to be a tearjerker, and I’m wondering if they’ll actually portray a wedding in the movie, complete with gown. I have no doubt there will be a Princess Di montage/flashback component.

Most of the gown ideas submitted are pretty standard wedding fare with a couple notable standouts: Joe Faris (season 5) put Kate in a blue quilted leather bustier with denim skirt; Malon Breton (season 3) put her in red; and Nicolas Putvinski (season 6) has her in a short gown made entirely of silver and gold feathers. Christian Siriano, sadly, did not participate.

While looking at sketches of wedding gowns can be a yawn or very exciting (depending on which point of the matrimonial spectrum you sit), if you’re a Project Runway fan, it’s worth a peek to catch up on what the designers are up to.

There’s been a lot of talk that reality shows like this don’t actually produce real-world stars, and generally that’s true. But all of the designers seem to have pretty steady gigs designing right now. There are a few surprises, like Casanova designing tote bags, but good for him, because who doesn’t need a tote bag or two?
