The hats were the first thing you noticed.
They were mostly black, some blue, and inspired by Picasso‘s paper guitar sculpture. Some sat like angular little pill boxes on the model’s heads, others were more sombrero-like, drizzled with happenstance graphics that could have been brushed on that morning.
But this was Oscar de la Renta Resort, not a millinery show, so we should probably talk about the clothes, too.
Referrencing cubism, as well as traditional Spanish wares, the collection was good. With patchwork dresses, polk dots, art deco-style broaches (pinned to little jackets) and plenty of embroidery, it felt fresh and young. In fact, we can see the girl who wears Proenza Schouler or Suno or Isabel Marant and shops at Bird wearing Oscar Resort at next season’s special events. But of course, he is the master of playful dressing, so why should we be surprised?
