The University of Chicago alumni magazine is an unlikely source of inspiration for us, but this month they’ve outdone themselves by featuring a project by Amy Zucker (MFA ’98). Amy is a Registered Nurse and case manager who works with the elderly in nursing homes. She fabricated a series of dresses out of medical supplies which are meant to be a statement about the elderly and their “tenuous” access to medical care. We’re just happy that Amy found a way to funnel her creativity. (See, Amy’s mom! That fine arts degree is totally paying off.) She didn’t use any toilet seat covers, luckily, otherwise we’d have to do an Adventures in Copyright.

Click through to see her creations and how they compare to what some fashion designers are doing these days.

Our friend Erica Domesek of P.S. I Made This fame is making an appearance at the FIT Barnes & Noble tonight from 4 to 7pm to speak about her experiences in the industry and to do a little project. She’ll discuss her early days in fashion, how the blog came to be and its unexpected but amazing success.

It’s no shock that our favorite thing about the Gap right now is the Pierre Hardy-designed shoe collection. Sadly, we’ve heard from up high that the French cobbler is not working working on a fall capsule for the specialty retailer.

Beyonce‘s highly anticipated video, “Run the World (Girls)” finally premiered last night. In it, Beyonce is the leader of fierce lady army in some apocalyptic world (which seems to be near Tbilisi, Georgia if you caught the signage in the video). Beyonce leads her lady warriors in a dance battle against the evil men. Also there is a lion and some scary looking dogs. One commenter on Fashin called it “Bollywood Beyond Thunderdome,” which I think is quite apt.

Obviously, Bey and her army are not going to duke it out against the boys in dusty rags and camo. Beyonce wears couture when she runs the world! And her army, well, they wear lots of bras and leather captains hats!

Here’s our take on the 10 best looks from Beyonce’s new video–from Givenchy couture to a body suit with more holes than Swiss cheese.

Fire Destroys Oxfam’s Warehouse: The charity lost hundreds of thousands of dollars in donated products that would have been sold in stores and at festivals across the globe, including a fair amount of vintage fashion items. Their machinery was also severely damaged, and the company has sent out a distress call for emergency donations. To help, donate via their website.

Charlotte Gainsbourg is Pregnant: We had no idea, but were so informed with pictures from Cannes, where she appeared in definitely atypical maternity gear. {The Cut}

Kim Catrall Isn’t the Biggest Supporter of SATC3 or the Rumored Prequel: Despite Sarah Jessica Parker’s insistence that there is “one more story to tell”, Catrall isn’t really that convinced and refreshingly admits that the sequels are nothing but an excuse to make money. Best line: “We can’t play twenty-year-olds anymore”. Amen, Samantha. {MovieWeb}

New York’s Sonia Rykiel Boutique Is Closing: Soft weeping will be heard throughout the city on Saturday, as the Upper East Side Madison Avenue boutique will shutter it’s doors on Saturday. The merchandise is heavily discounted though, and a new location is in the works. {Racked}

Forbes100 Most Powerful Celebrities list is out, and Lady Gaga–shocker!–is number one this year, knocking poor Oprah from her first place spot. While Oprah earned a whopping $290 million to Gaga’s paltry $90 million, the Lady won out because of her wide-reaching influence via both traditional and social media. She’s everywhere and has some of the most rabid fans around. Whatever product or cause she touches benefits from its association with her.

Overall, fashion people didn’t get a lot of love on Forbes’ list this year, but there were a few shout-outs. (We should note that the Biebs is number three–he transcends categorization.) David Beckham is number 35, and Forbes reported that his “pitch prowess” has declined. We beg to differ now in light of his just-revealed lifestyle empire. He’ll surely be higher on the list next year.

Models did pretty well.

Louis Vuitton’s fall show may have been all about fetish, but the fall print campaign, revealed today in WWD, is a bit lighter and less twisted. It’s even cute. Why? Japanese Chins (or spaniels), that’s why.

These adorable black and white doggies give the campaign’s stars–Zuzanna Bijoch, Daphne Groeneveld, Gertrud Hegelund, Nyasha Matonhodze, Anaïs Pouliot and Fei Fei Sun–a run for their money. And apparently these pedigreed pooches competed for the coveted gig just like the models. Read more »

The Beckhams are already at the top of the earnings food chain, and now they’re poised to go even further. While he already has two fragrances with Coty, David Beckham is launching a third in September called Homme by David Beckham.

And now he’s taking it further than just fragrances–Beckham’s going to be a full-on lifestyle brand. He and his business partner, Simon Fuller (of American Idol and Spice Girls-producing fame), have an empire in mind. “David and I have a number of ambitious and exciting ideas in development across a broad range of categories,” Fuller told WWD. “The next 10 years will see David evolve into being recognized, not just as an iconic sports figure, but also as an important entrepreneur.” Beckham recognizes that his career is winding down, though he says he plans to play soccer for a few more years.

In addition to the fragrance, Beckham’s next launch is a men’s bodywear line.

Maria Shriver is going through hell this week. But somehow, even as news of her soon-to-be-ex-husband Arnold Schwarzenegger’s affair and love child with one of their staffers broke, she managed to put on a brave face, sexy blue sequined dress and inject some serious volume into her hair for an appearance at her buddy Oprah’s celeb-filled farewell spectacular in Chicago yesterday.

It’s hard to imagine how she pulled it together for such a public appearance amidst the media onslaught about the torrid demise of her marriage. But here are some women–politicians’ wives and celebrities alike, who probably can imagine what Shriver is going through. They all weathered incredibly messy and public splits and through it all they held their heads high and managed to look fantastic. Take a look:

Last evening’s Somaly Mam Foundation event answered the prayers of a rare breed of geek: the Model UN-er cum fashionista. Yes I can confirm they exist as my glued-to-CSPAN self is one of them, and what better way to entice such an odd hybrid than with certified hot nerd host, Seth Myers.

When Lauren asked me to cover this event I essentially jumped out of my seat, “I’m a former Model UN nerd!” I exclaimed via email, “Ha, i did Model UN, too!” she replied. [Ed note: Leah did Model UN too. Is this a trend?] It was then I realized that there must be more geeks like us, and decided to pull some investigative maneuvers at last evening’s soiree to find them.
